ELCO Football Season Outlook
Last year in Myerstown, it was the Jake Williams show. The senior running back rumbled his way to 2,402 yards and became the 2nd single-season rusher in the history of the Lancaster Lebanon League. Behind his playmaking ability, the Raiders finished the regular season with a 7-3 record and then pummeled Big Spring, 34-7, in the 1st round of the District 3 Playoffs. Now that Williams is headed to join his brother Luke at Bloomsburg, how will ELCO respond in 2024?
Those who think the Raiders will find their way into mediocrity were not paying close attention last season. First of all, the offensive line that blocked effectively for the run game to succeed featured only one senior, Carter Kemper, and will be returning everyone else from the crew that were affectionately named the “Plow Boys” (Bradyn Malloy, Tupac Vasquez-Disla, Luke Bailey, and Paul Williams). Additionally, Williams often found his way to the bench by halftime, giving his teammates like Mitchell Frederick and Ellis Gensamer an opportunity to pick up valuable experience. In fact, Williams sat out in a Week 9 matchup against Donegal, which ELCO won to improve their postseason chances. The 12-0 victory over Donegal was a credit to the strength of ELCO’s blocking scheme and their depth on both sides of the ball.
They will now enter 2024 with a team that has a strong core of senior leaders who are dedicated to continuing the success they have experienced during their high school football careers. While the linemen may be the most heralded of the units on the roster, the Raiders feature a level of talent that will allow Coach Bob Miller to effectively plan against a very tough Section 4 schedule that now features Lampeter-Strasburg, Twin Valley, and Wyomissing.
The main goal for the season is for the players to have fun while holding themselves to a high standard both on and off the field. They have shown their commitment by doing all of the little things, such as attending the team book study, cleaning up after practice, and spending time together.
This year’s Raiders will start their 2024 with a Saturday afternoon game at West York, which will be their first opportunity to showcase their collective growth since last season.
