Vikings Show Grit, Defensive Growth in Weekend Matchups with Northern
Northern Lebanon’s youth football teams battled through a full slate of games Saturday, with young Vikings producing key defensive stops, explosive plays, and important developmental moments throughout the day.
The Northern Lebanon Midget Football Association continued its season against Northern, with the Vikings showing flashes of strong defense, improved execution, and resilience across multiple age levels.
While the scoreboard did not always fall Northern Lebanon’s way, several performances stood out as the Vikings continued building toward the second half of the season.
Smurf Vikings Find Their Rhythm After Halftime
Exhibition Game
As an exhibition and developmental level, the Smurf game was less about the final score and more about another opportunity for Northern Lebanon’s youngest players to gain confidence and experience. The matchup unfolded as a tale of two halves.
Northern’s defense made things difficult for the Vikings early, while Northern Lebanon’s defense worked to keep the game within reach. Luke Mekailek, Jayden Schellhammer, and Kodyak Engle helped anchor the Viking defense and limit opportunities throughout the first half.
Northern Lebanon received a little extra encouragement at halftime from varsity running back and recent LebCoSports Athlete of the Week Brady Ryan, and the young Vikings responded.
The offense began finding running room behind a reenergized offensive line, with Liam Lundquist and Brock Carpenter producing several productive carries. LJ Horst and Beau Reedy were among those helping create opportunities up front.
The improvement eventually resulted in a Vikings scoring drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown run from Carpenter.
Northern Lebanon even reached into the playbook late, attempting a jet sweep that transitioned into a pass attempt. The play fell incomplete, but the willingness to execute something more complex represented another positive step for the young group.
For the Smurfs, the second-half response may have been the most important takeaway of the afternoon.
Peewee Defense Keeps Vikings in Battle
Final: Northern 7, Northern Lebanon 0
Defense dominated the Peewee matchup from the opening whistle.
Northern Lebanon immediately created momentum with a hard hit that knocked the football loose, allowing the Vikings to recover the fumble.
The defensive effort continued throughout the first half, with perhaps the biggest sequence coming near the goal line. With Northern threatening deep in Viking territory, Northern Lebanon held its ground and produced a goal-line stand to preserve a 0-0 tie entering halftime.
Northern eventually broke through for the game’s only score, but the Vikings continued battling in a tightly contested 7-0 loss.
The performance offered another encouraging example of Northern Lebanon’s defense keeping the team within one possession and giving the offense opportunities throughout the game.
Pony Vikings Continue Working Through Challenging Stretch
Final: Northern 40, Northern Lebanon 0
The Pony Vikings faced a difficult matchup against Northern and will look to use the experience as another opportunity for growth as the season progresses.
Even during a challenging afternoon on the field, the Northern Lebanon cheerleaders kept the Viking sideline and crowd energized, continuing to support their athletes from start to finish.
For a developing youth football team, difficult games can become important teaching opportunities, and the Vikings will have another chance to build on Saturday’s experience when they return to action.
Big Plays Highlight Midget Matchup
Final: Northern 14, Northern Lebanon 14
The Midget Vikings produced several of Northern Lebanon’s biggest plays of the day on both sides of the football.
Blake Yocum helped set the tone defensively with several strong tackles during Northern’s opening possession.
When the Vikings took over offensively, Titus Feagley delivered several productive runs before Noah Leidhecker broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run, providing Northern Lebanon with an early offensive spark.
Leidhecker continued making an impact on defense, recording an interception with approximately six minutes remaining in the second quarter. He nearly added another explosive play just before halftime.
With roughly 30 seconds remaining, Leidhecker took a kickoff all the way to the end zone for what appeared to be a touchdown, but the return was erased by a holding penalty against Northern Lebanon.
The Viking defense responded again before the half ended, as Kylan Hetrick intercepted a pass with approximately 10 seconds remaining, giving Northern Lebanon its second takeaway of the quarter.
The combination of explosive offense, strong tackling, and multiple interceptions gave the Midgets several positives to carry forward. The game eventually went to overtime, where a wild finish resulted in the teams finishing deadlocked at 14-14.
Vikings Ready to Keep Building
Saturday’s games offered Northern Lebanon athletes another weekend of valuable competition.
From the Smurfs responding after halftime, to the Peewees producing a critical goal-line stand, to the Midgets generating turnovers and explosive plays, the Vikings continued showing signs of progress throughout the program.
Northern Lebanon will now turn its attention toward another opportunity to compete in front of its home crowd. The Vikings will host Carlisle on Saturday, September 12, as the football and cheer programs continue their 2026 seasons.
