Friday

Northern Lebanon 28, Hamburg 0

Fifty years ago, the Northern Lebanon Vikings football team hosted Hamburg during the program’s first full varsity season. On Friday night, the Vikings and Hawks met again, this time with Northern Lebanon looking to continue its strong start to the 2026 season and improve to 2-0.

Northern Lebanon’s defense dominated from the start. On Hamburg’s opening possession, the Vikings forced a fourth-and-one and stopped the Hawks to take over at the Hamburg 31-yard line. Brady Ryan, fresh off being named the first LebCo Athlete of the Week of the fall after his four-touchdown performance against Pine Grove, took advantage of the short field, finishing the possession with a one-yard touchdown run to give Northern Lebanon an early 7-0 lead.

The Vikings continued to move the ball later in the first quarter, with a roughing-the-passer penalty on third down helping extend the drive. Ryan continued his awesome start to the season by finishing it with a 13-yard touchdown run, giving Northern Lebanon a 14-0 lead with 2:34 remaining in the opening quarter.

Hamburg spent much of the second quarter working its way down the field and trying to cut into the deficit. However, a false start on fourth down backed up the Hawks, and the Vikings managed to get the stop and regain possession. Hamburg’s defense answered before halftime, stopping Northern Lebanon at the 16-yard line to keep the game at 14-0 heading into the break.

The Hawks again put together a lengthy drive in the third quarter, advancing to the Northern Lebanon 34-yard line. This time, junior Landon Graby came up with a sack to end the threat and give the Vikings the ball back at their own 43.

Northern Lebanon wasted little time delivering another big play to start the fourth quarter. Markus Miller connected with Ryan for a 44-yard touchdown pass, stretching the Vikings’ advantage to 21-0.

Hamburg was not ready to go away quietly. The Hawks responded by driving all the way to the Northern Lebanon eight-yard line, giving themselves one of their best opportunities of the night to get on the scoreboard. But the Vikings’ defense was simply too strong, keeping Hamburg out of the end zone and preserving the shutout.

With the defense holding firm, Ryan provided the finishing touch. The senior broke free for a 57-yard touchdown run, his fourth score of the night, to extend Northern Lebanon’s lead to 28-0.

Hamburg had opportunities and was able to move the ball down the field at different points throughout the game, but Northern Lebanon continued to come up with stops when they mattered most. The Vikings finished off the shutout and improved to 2-0 on the season.

Through two games, Northern Lebanon’s defense has yet to allow an offensive point. The only points surrendered by the Vikings this season came on a safety in their Week 1 victory over Pine Grove.

After the game, Head Coach Nate Monroe praised the way his team responded when challenged.

“I think we came out with good energy and we stayed resilient. We had some adversity there in the first half but we really battled through in the second half so I couldn’t be more proud of the guys.”

Ryan, who followed last week’s four-touchdown effort with four more scores against Hamburg, was equally focused on the team effort and what comes next.

“Had a great team win, played together as a team, looking forward to Minersville next week.”

Northern Lebanon (2-0) will travel to Minersville next Friday as the Vikings look to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Palmyra 40, Red Land 27

Palmyra entered Week 2 looking to get into the win column after a close season-opening loss to Garden Spot. Red Land came in from the opposite direction, carrying a 1-0 record following a Week 1 victory over Cedar Cliff.

Early on, it was the Patriots who were able to take control. Palmyra did come up with an early defensive play when Jaxin Robinson intercepted a pass with 10:30 remaining in the first quarter, but Red Land eventually broke through. The Patriots connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 4:17 left in the quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

Red Land added to its advantage early in the second quarter. A 22-yard screen pass moved the Patriots to the Palmyra three-yard line before a rushing touchdown made it 14-0 with 10:01 remaining in the half.

Facing its first significant deficit of the young season, Palmyra responded. Roman Russek led the Cougars on a 72-yard drive and finished it by finding Robinson for a seven-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was no good, leaving Red Land ahead 14-6 with 7:14 remaining in the second quarter.

The momentum continued to shift. After Mason Kyper nearly came away with an interception and the Palmyra defense forced a punt, Aaron Villifane provided one of the biggest plays of the half. The senior running back broke free for a physical 38-yard touchdown run, and the extra point pulled the Cougars within 14-13 with 5:23 remaining.

Red Land answered with a 36-yard touchdown pass to rebuild its lead to 21-13, but Palmyra had one more response before halftime. Russek directed the Cougars down the field before keeping the ball himself for a four-yard touchdown with 25.5 seconds remaining. Red Land blocked the extra point, sending Palmyra into halftime trailing 21-19.

After spending much of the first half playing from behind, the Cougars took their first lead midway through the third quarter. A 12-yard reception by Anthony Pinko helped move Palmyra into the red zone, but the drive eventually came down to fourth-and-goal. Russek delivered, connecting with Kyper for a five-yard touchdown. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, but Palmyra had moved in front 25-21 with 6:23 remaining in the third.

Red Land threatened to answer later in the quarter, advancing into the red zone. On third down, Villifane made an important tackle to set up fourth-and-seven. The Patriots elected to go for it, but the pass fell incomplete and Palmyra took over on downs. The Cougars carried their 25-21 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The defense came through again early in the final period. Red Land faced another fourth down, this time needing three yards, and Villifane stopped the quarterback in the backfield to turn the ball over on downs with 9:26 remaining.

Palmyra took advantage. Kyper picked up 30 yards on a screen pass and later added a 10-yard reception to move the Cougars into the red zone. On second-and-13 from the 15, Russek took off for a touchdown, extending Palmyra’s lead to 32-21 with 6:45 to play.

Red Land refused to go away. The Patriots moved quickly downfield and scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 5:09 remaining. Their two-point conversion attempt failed, keeping Palmyra in front 32-27 and setting up a tense finish.

The Cougars eventually faced fourth-and-one with just over two minutes remaining, needing one yard to help put the game away. Russek did much more than that. The senior quarterback went up the middle and broke free for a 39-yard touchdown, turning a critical fourth-down situation into the biggest play of the night. Pinko caught the ensuing two-point conversion to give Palmyra a 40-27 advantage with 2:16 remaining.

Red Land took one final shot downfield, but Robinson came away with his second interception of the game with 1:42 left. Robinson then broke an 85-yard run to move the Cougars to the Red Land 12-yard line, allowing Palmyra to kneel out the remaining time and secure the victory.

After trailing 14-0 early and 21-19 at halftime, Palmyra outscored Red Land 21-6 in the second half to earn a 40-27 road victory. The Cougars repeatedly responded when challenged, with the offense producing big plays and the defense coming through with fourth-down stops and turnovers at critical moments.

For Russek, the night included three rushing touchdowns and two touchdown passes as he helped engineer the comeback. Robinson caught one of those scoring passes, intercepted two Red Land throws and provided the 85-yard run that effectively closed the door. Villifane added a touchdown and two important fourth-quarter defensive plays, while Kyper became a frequent target as Palmyra took control in the second half.

The comeback gives Palmyra its first victory of the 2026 season and evens the Cougars’ record at 1-1.

Thursday

Cedar Crest 69, Lebanon 0

Cedar Crest continued its dominant start to the 2026 season Thursday night, defeating Lebanon 69-0 in the 54th annual Cedar Bowl. The victory marked the Falcons’ 14th straight Cedar Bowl win and moved Cedar Crest to 2-0 on the season.

After opening the year with a 45-12 victory over Central Dauphin East, Cedar Crest entered the rivalry matchup with plenty of momentum. Lebanon, meanwhile, was looking to regroup after a 55-0 loss to Daniel Boone in Week 1. The Falcons wasted little time establishing control and never allowed the Cedars to find an answer.

Cedar Crest kicked off to begin the game, but the Falcons quickly got the ball back when Lebanon fumbled. Isaiah Zimmerman capitalized on the early opportunity, finding the end zone on a six-yard touchdown run to put the Falcons ahead 7-0.

Steven Reyes then connected with Jackson Smith on a 66-yard touchdown pass, extending the advantage to 14-0. Lebanon’s Chris Robles provided a spark with a strong return, but Cedar Crest’s defense responded by shutting down the Cedars’ ensuing opportunity. Zimmerman then found the end zone again, giving him his sixth touchdown of the season and pushing the Falcons ahead 21-0.

Lebanon’s struggles continued when the Cedars fumbled a punt and recovered, but the ball remained deep in their own territory. Cedar Crest took advantage, with Mason Cevette hauling in a 15-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-0.

The Falcons’ defense continued to make life difficult for the Cedars. Griffin Schomp and Garrett Starry each collected sacks as Lebanon tried to generate something offensively. On the other side, Zimmerman found the end zone again as Cedar Crest continued its early scoring barrage, making it 35-0.

Lebanon attempted to take a deep shot on its next opportunity, but the Cedars turned the ball over on downs. Cedar Crest immediately capitalized, with Kai Speaks catching a 26-yard touchdown pass to make it 42-0 heading into the second quarter.

Lebanon continued to battle despite the deficit. Zyair Molyneux made a strong open-field tackle, but the Cedars were unable to generate sustained offense. Reyes then connected with Antonio Tirado on a 64-yard touchdown pass, pushing the Falcons ahead 49-0.

Cedar Crest began working its backups into the game as the second half approached. Ben Danz checked in for Reyes and immediately made an impact, keeping the ball himself for a 31-yard touchdown run that extended the lead to 56-0.

Lebanon continued to show perseverance despite the lopsided score. Jafthy Alicea put together a strong run, but Cedar Crest’s defense answered when Ben Garland intercepted a pass to end the Cedars’ possession.

With the second half underway, the clock began running outside of timeouts. Jewelz Hernandez joined the scoring effort for Cedar Crest, breaking loose for a nine-yard touchdown run to make it 63-0.

The Cedars finally produced one of their biggest offensive plays of the night when Robles broke free for a 40-yard run, taking Lebanon into Falcons territory for the first time in the game. The drive ultimately ended on a turnover on downs, however, and Cedar Crest responded once again. James Smith finished the ensuing opportunity with a two-yard touchdown run, giving the Falcons the final 69-0 margin.

The victory moves Cedar Crest to 2-0 on the season and continues a dominant opening stretch for a Falcons team that reached the District 3 Class 6A playoffs last season. Lebanon falls to 0-2, with both teams now turning their attention toward Week 3. Cedar Crest will travel to face Warwick, while Lebanon will return home to host Reading.

  Annville-Cleona 46, Biglerville 0

Annville-Cleona returned home looking to put last week’s difficult road loss at Hanover behind it. Biglerville entered the matchup 0-1 after falling to Bermudian Springs in Week 1, while the Dutchmen were looking for their first win of the season in front of their home crowd.

The Dutchmen wasted little time setting the tone. Biglerville won the toss and deferred, giving A-C the opening possession, and Yama Navarro provided excellent field position with a kickoff return to the 50-yard line. Annville-Cleona capitalized on the opportunity, scoring at 10:17 of the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead.

Biglerville took over at its own 17 following the score, but a facemask penalty against A-C moved the Canners to the 37. The Dutchmen defense answered when Dom Nash intercepted Biglerville, giving A-C the ball at the Canners’ 27-yard line. Englehart then powered his way into the end zone to extend the lead to 12-0.

The Dutchmen defense continued to control the game, stuffing Biglerville on fourth down and taking over at its own 38-yard line. Annville-Cleona turned the stop into another scoring drive, with Navarro finding the end zone again at 9:59 of the second quarter to make it 18-0.

Biglerville attempted to respond, moving the ball to the A-C 28-yard line with around seven minutes remaining in the half. Facing fourth-and-12, the Canners called timeout before the play, but Maddox White came away with an interception to give Annville-Cleona its third pick of the first half.

The Dutchmen carried an 18-0 advantage into halftime, and the defense continued to make life difficult for Biglerville after the break.

Annville-Cleona pulled further away in the second half as Devo found the end zone multiple times. His touchdown with 10:51 remaining in the fourth quarter pushed the Dutchmen advantage to 39-0.

Biglerville’s next possession ended almost immediately when the Canners fumbled on the first play. A-C recovered at the Biglerville 29 and turned the takeaway into another scoring opportunity. The Dutchmen eventually reached first-and-goal at the five-yard line, where Bennett Putt scored his first career touchdown with 8:54 remaining, extending the lead to 46-0.

With the game firmly in hand, Annville-Cleona turned things over to its backups for the remainder of the fourth quarter. The Dutchmen defense preserved the shutout, capping a dominant performance that featured multiple takeaways.

The 46-0 victory gives Annville-Cleona its first win of the season after opening the year with a loss at Hanover. The Dutchmen will look to carry the momentum into next week’s matchup with Donegal.

Coach Gingrich’s Post-Game Thoughts

On the overall improvement from Week 1:

“The game was much better than the week before. We were still a little nervous on offense, trying to be too perfect instead of playing fast, but our line set the tone. The first play of the game, we got this amazing push, and I knew we were going to be okay.”

On the play of the offensive line and running backs:

“Offensively, we got a great push up front. Our line and tight ends were awesome. Pancake blocks all over the place. The running backs did a good job. I think we had nine kids carry the ball, which is a great number for us. Yama and Devo were both over 100, but we had a lot of other kids running the ball, too, and feel very confident about all their skills.”

On where the offense can still improve:

“We still have to pass better. We went 5-for-8 for 50 yards. That’s good, but we’d like to be better than that.”

On the defensive improvement and six turnovers:

“Defensively, we saw a major improvement. We still have a lot to go. We were switching between two different defenses, and that helped us out a lot with different personnel. We caused five of the six turnovers. Those five interceptions are the most since I’ve been here, so that was great on defense.”

On the special teams stepping up:

“Special teams were very good. Our starting kicker is out for probably half the year, so Levi Kreider has been doing the kicking for us. We actually had a freshman step up. After we missed the first extra point, we didn’t kick the next couple, and then he went 4-for-4 and did a great job.”

On getting contributions throughout the roster:

“We have a lot of kids at a lot of different levels who did a good job last night. Our seniors did well, and then we bookended that with some freshmen who are receiving a lot of playing time and doing well with it. So, good night.”

On turning the attention to Donegal:

“Big game this week against Donegal and the new coach, Sean Mannion, who’s a really good coach.”
