Raiders Cap Busy Stretch with Four-Set Win Over Wyomissing

It has been a busy and productive stretch for the ELCO girls volleyball team.

After a runner-up finish at the 15-team Pine Grove Tournament over the weekend, the Raiders jumped right into a packed week of regular-season action. ELCO survived a five-set thriller against Northern Lebanon on Monday, swept Lampeter-Strasburg on Tuesday, then returned home Wednesday and kept things rolling with a 3-1 victory over Wyomissing.

Against the Spartans, ELCO grabbed the opening set 25-18 before Wyomissing responded with a 25-19 victory in the second. The Raiders regained control from there, taking the third set 25-19 and closing out the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth.

Keirra Sholl led the ELCO attack with 21 kills while also collecting 12 digs. Julia Wenger directed the offense with 21 assists and added three aces, while Lillian Anthony contributed 15 digs and three aces.

For Wyomissing, Caris Way finished with five kills, Gilli Fiorentino served three aces, Jay Fabian collected 11 digs and Sofia Beswick handed out 19 assists.

The recent run began Saturday at the Pine Grove Tournament, where ELCO put together an impressive showing against a 15-team field. The Raiders went 6-2 during pool play, finishing behind only Tri-Valley at 7-1. Based on point differential, ELCO entered the six-team playoff as the No. 6 seed.

From there, the Raiders knocked off third-seeded Mahanoy 25-19 in the quarterfinals and second-seeded Pottsgrove 25-16 in the semifinals. That earned ELCO a championship matchup with top-seeded Tri-Valley, where the Raiders battled before falling 25-20 to finish as tournament runner-up.

Sholl put together a strong all-around tournament with 32 kills, seven aces, six blocks and 34 digs. Morgan Wise added seven aces, Anthony recorded 38 digs and Keira Stine distributed 40 assists.

Northern Lebanon also represented Lebanon County well at the tournament. The Vikings went 6-2 in pool play to earn the No. 4 seed, defeated fifth-seeded Pine Grove in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals before falling to eventual champion Tri-Valley.

Following the tournament, ELCO has carried that momentum into the regular season with three victories in three nights. After some time to recover from the busy stretch, the Raiders will next be in action Tuesday when they travel to Warwick.
