Cougars Move to 10-0 with Shutout at Gettysburg
The Palmyra Cougars entered Thursday’s road game against Gettysburg seeking their 10th win of the season in 10 tries. Behind a combined shutout from three pitchers and a big swing from Aidan Willard, the Cougars got exactly that, knocking off Gettysburg 6-0 to stay unbeaten.
Palmyra broke through in the 3rd inning when Matthew Eldridge delivered an RBI single to put the Cougars on the board. That gave the Cougars an early lead, and their pitching staff made sure it held up.
The biggest blow came in the 5th. With two runners aboard, Aidan Willard launched a three-run homer to right field, stretching the Palmyra advantage to 4-0 and giving the Cougars breathing room. The long ball was Willard’s fifth of the season, and the senior continues to be one of the area’s most dangerous bats and now has an impressive line that includes a .406 average, a .596 on-base percentage, 16 RBI, and 13 stolen bases.
On the mound, Logan Kriner earned the win after tossing four scoreless innings. Kriner allowed just one hit, walked none, and struck out nine while improving to 2-0 on the season with a 1.50 ERA. Chuck Gnall followed with two shutout innings in relief, and Aidan Willard worked the 7th to complete the combined shutout, getting the final out on a groundout.
At the plate, Ezra Good and Matthew Eldridge each collected two hits for Palmyra, while Willard drove in three runs with his homer. Eldridge’s big day came as the sophomore continued his strong start and now touts a .393 average and 10 RBI. Palmyra also showed patience throughout the night, drawing six walks, with Nolan Bown leading the way with two free passes.
Gettysburg managed just two hits, with Tyler Werkert and Kyle Lew recording one apiece. The Warriors did turn a double play, but they could not solve Palmyra’s pitching.
Palmyra is now 10-0 and will be back in action on Monday at Red Land.
