Palmyra Erupts Late to Finish Off Carlisle Early, Now 7-0

After moving to 6-0 with an extra-inning win over Warwick on Friday night, Palmyra was back in action Monday with a road trip to face Carlisle at George Bowen Field. The Cougars had to battle through a tight game early, but a huge 5th inning helped them seize control before the game ended after six innings once Palmyra built a double-digit lead, resulting in a 17-4 victory.

Carlisle struck first in the bottom of the 1st when Bradyn Sober launched a solo home run to left field for an early 1-0 lead.

Palmyra answered in the top of the 2nd. Anthony Pinko singled down the left field line to bring home the tying run and make it 1-1.

The Thundering Herd moved back in front in the bottom of the 2nd when Connor Nelson singled in a run to give Carlisle a 2-1 edge. Palmyra responded again in the 3rd, tying the game at 2-2 on a passed ball, but Carlisle answered in the bottom half when Colby Focht delivered an RBI single to make it 3-2.

The Cougars pulled even once more in the top of the 4th. Julian Meley singled to right field to plate the tying run and make it a 3-3 game.

Palmyra finally broke it open in the 5th. Matthew Eldridge started the surge with a 2-run homer to left, Meley followed with a 2-run triple to right, and Ezra Good added a 2-run single down the right field line as the Cougars turned a one-run game into a 9-3 advantage.

The Cougars kept adding from there. Eldridge, who finished 3-for-4, also doubled in the 4th and singled in the 6th as part of a big day at the plate. Palmyra then put the game away in the 7th, scoring six more runs. Adam Strohecker came home after tagging up, a Carlisle error brought in two more, and Aidan Willard crushed a 3-run homer to right to cap the outburst.

Meley led Palmyra with 4 RBI from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-5. Eldridge finished with 3 hits, while Good, Nolan Bown, Pinko, and Willard each added multi-hit efforts. Palmyra totaled 15 hits and also showed patience at the plate with 7 walks. Jesse Willi and Willard each drew 2 free passes. The Cougars also turned a double play in the field.

On the mound, Grady Stephens earned the win in relief after tossing 3 scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed just 1 hit, struck out 2, and walked 2. Logan Kriner started for Palmyra and worked the first 3 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs, 2 earned, while striking out 6. Nate Holt also appeared in relief.

For Carlisle, Isaiah Ream and Will Donnelly each collected 2 hits. Focht, Sober, Nelson, and Carter Welker each drove in a run for the Thundering Herd.

Palmyra, now 7-0, will look to add to its win total when it travels to Lower Dauphin on Wednesday.
