Cedar Crest Falls to Cocalico Despite Late Rally

Cedar Crest entered Wednesday’s home game at 2-0 and used a late surge in an effort to keep its record unblemished before eventually falling to visiting Cocalico, 6-5.

Cocalico opened the scoring in the top of the 1st when an error brought home a run to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

Cedar Crest answered in the bottom of the 2nd. Lucas Schreier singled down the left field line on a full count, bringing home the tying run and evening the score at 1-1.

The Eagles moved back in front in the top of the 4th when Noah Zimmerman delivered an RBI single to make it 2-1.

The Falcons answered again in the bottom of the 5th. Skyler Sherman lifted a sacrifice fly that tied the game at 2-2 and helped set the stage for a tense final two innings.

Cocalico created separation in the top of the 6th, scoring four times to grab control. Logan Horning brought in a run with a sacrifice bunt, Zimmerman followed with another RBI single down the right field line, Jasiah Rios added a run on a groundout, and Cedar Crest also committed an error in the inning as the Eagles pushed their lead to 6-2.

Cedar Crest did not go away quietly. Facing a four-run deficit, the Falcons mounted a late push and nearly came all the way back. Cedar Crest closed the gap by scoring on a groundout, a single, and a fielder’s choice, trimming the deficit to one before Cocalico held on for the 6-5 win.

Schreier led Cedar Crest offensively, going 1-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. Isaac Kreider, Chase Ruhl, and Chase Boger also had hits for the Falcons, while Sherman drove in a run. Cedar Crest showed patience at the plate throughout the day, drawing 9 walks, with Brayden Dorshimer and Kreider each picking up 2. The Falcons also stole 5 bases in the loss.

On the mound, Chase Norris started for Cedar Crest and allowed 3 hits and 2 runs, 1 earned, over 4 innings while striking out 2 and walking 1. Mason Copenhaver took the loss in relief after allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 1 hit across 2 innings. Griffin Lorenzo worked a scoreless 7th.

For Cocalico, Zimmerman led the way with 2 RBIs from the lower part of the lineup. Aiden Davis started and went 5 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs while striking out 4 and walking 6. Colten Stoltzfus earned the win in relief, giving up 1 hit and 3 runs, 2 earned, over the final 2 innings. The Eagles also turned a double play.

Cedar Crest is now 2-1 and will travel to Manheim Central on Friday.
