Five-Run 3rd Powers Palmyra Past Elizabethtown

After defeating Deer Lakes for a season-opening victory in Myrtle Beach on Saturday, the Cougars returned to the field Thursday to face Elizabethtown. The last time the two teams met was in the PIAA State Playoffs when the Bears won in a 3-2 nail-biter that lasted 9 innings. This time things would result in a much different outcome.

Palmyra broke the game open in the 3rd inning, using a combination of timely hitting and pressure on the bases to pull away. Aiden Willard brought in a run on a groundout before Ezra Good followed with an RBI double. Jesse Willi added a run-scoring single later in the frame, while the Cougars also capitalized on an Elizabethtown error and a hit batter with the bases loaded as five runs crossed the plate.

The Cougars finished with nine hits in the game, led by Willi, who went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Good added a 2-for-4 performance with 2 runs scored and an RBI, while Adam Strohecker finished with 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. Strohecker also swiped two bases to help keep pressure on the Bears’ defense.

On the mound, Max Woodley started and worked three innings, allowing two hits and one run while walking four and striking out one. Grady Stephens followed with four innings of relief to earn the win, giving up four hits and two earned runs while striking out one and walking one.

Palmyra improved to 2-0 with the victory and will look to keep the strong start going Friday when the Cougars face Lebanon.
