PIAA State Track & Field Championships – Day 1 Results

On the first day of the PIAA State Track & Field Championships, nine LebCo athletes and four relay teams competed in a combination of finals and prelim races that served as qualification for Saturday’s finals. No matter the outcome, it is important to remember that even competing at the PIAA State Track & Field Championship is a huge accomplishment in the varsity career of a high school athlete.

Two Field events featuring LebCo athletes had their Finals on Friday afternoon. Palmyra’s Mason Bucks completed in the Boys AAA Pole Vault, where he medaled in the event for the third straight year, earning bronze after clearing 15’6″. In the Girls AAA Triple Jump, Lebanon’s Zariyah Whigham (Sr.) jumped 38’1.75″ to claim a 6th place medal. ELCO’s Makenna Haas (Jr.) finished 9th, just one spot shy of earning a medal.

The 1600m Finals were also run with Ramon Urena Bastista (Sr.) competing in the AAA race and Annville-Cleona’s Oliver Funck (So.) competing in AA. While both finished out of medal contention, they represented themselves very well. However, their exceptional efforts were out shadowed when Butler’s Drew Griffith won the AAA race with a 3:57.08 to set a new National Record.

Several Preliminary races were run on Friday, with the top eight from each event advancing to Saturday’s medal round. Palmyra’s Tyler Burgess (Jr.) earned his spot in the Finals of the 110m High Hurdles and the 300m IM Hurdles with the #1 and #2 seeds, respectively. Also carrying a top seed into Day 2 will be Cedar Crest’s Kaddel Howard (So.), who ran a 53.76 ahead of defending her State gold medal.

The Annville-Cleona Girls’ 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams, consisting of Sophia Caporaletti, Kendall Cooper, Miracle Hershey, and Jada Morales, also qualified for the AA Finals. The Dutchmen’s qualification included breaking their own school record in the 4x100m, running a 49.08 to gain the #2 seed for the Finals.

Below is a comprehensive list of all of the results from Friday. Medal winners are highlighted in orange. Athletes advancing to the Finals are highlighted in green.
