Thursday
Berks Catholic 21, Annville-Cleona 14
Annville-Cleona entered Thursday night facing another major test in its Section 5 schedule as the Dutchmen welcomed Berks Catholic. A-C had won back-to-back games against Lancaster Catholic and Columbia to improve to 3-2, and the Dutchmen were looking to keep that momentum going against the Saints.
Berks Catholic struck first, finding the end zone with 8:10 remaining in the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
The Dutchmen answered. Yamaliel Navarro found the end zone with 3:39 remaining in the first quarter, allowing A-C to pull even at 7-7.
Berks Catholic regained the advantage almost immediately after the start of the second quarter. Facing fourth-and-three, the Saints kept the ball on the ground and converted the play for a touchdown, putting A-C behind 14-7 with 11:53 remaining before halftime.
The Dutchmen responded by putting together another drive deep into Berks Catholic territory. A-C reached the Saints’ 21-yard line midway through the second quarter and continued to push toward the end zone, but Berks Catholic eventually came away with an interception in the end zone on fourth-and-long to end the threat.
A-C’s defense made sure the missed opportunity did not hurt for long. The Dutchmen got the ball back and, with 2:51 remaining before halftime, Devon Englehart broke loose for a 58-yard touchdown run. The explosive play tied the game at 14-14 and ensured the two teams would head into halftime even.
Annville-Cleona received the opening kickoff of the second half, but it was Berks Catholic that eventually broke the tie.
Facing third-and-four with 7:05 remaining in the third quarter, the Saints broke a 47-yard touchdown run to regain the lead at 21-14.
That would be the final scoring play of the night, but there was plenty of drama still to come.
Annville-Cleona continued to battle and eventually put together a drive that carried all the way to the Berks Catholic goal line. The Dutchmen faced fourth-and-goal, but Englehart was stopped at the one-yard line with 2:31 remaining, allowing the Saints to preserve their seven-point advantage.
A-C’s defense gave the offense one more opportunity, and the Dutchmen again marched toward the goal line with a chance to tie the game.
In an almost déjà vu moment, Annville-Cleona found itself back at the Berks Catholic one-yard line in the closing seconds. On third-and-goal, the Dutchmen made a push toward the end zone. From the sideline, the play appeared extremely close, but the officials ruled A-C short of the goal line after taking time to establish the spot.
That brought an end to a dramatic finish, with Berks Catholic escaping Annville with the 21-14 victory.
For the Dutchmen, it was a difficult way to have their two-game winning streak come to an end. A-C had two opportunities at the one-yard line late in the game and came within inches of potentially forcing overtime against a tough Berks Catholic team.
Navarro provided Annville-Cleona’s first touchdown, while Englehart’s 58-yard run supplied the biggest offensive play of the night and sent the teams into halftime tied. The Dutchmen defense also did its part, holding Berks Catholic scoreless after the Saints’ 47-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter and giving the offense multiple opportunities to tie the game late.
Ultimately, A-C came up just short on both of those late goal-line opportunities. Still, the Dutchmen battled Berks Catholic until the final seconds in a game that could have gone either way at the goal line.
Annville-Cleona falls to 3-3 on the season with the 21-14 loss. The Dutchmen will look to rebound next week when they hit the road for a Section 5 matchup against Pequea Valley.

Coach Gingrich’s Postgame Thoughts
On another close game and the team’s effort:
“We lost another close game. Our kids fought, as usual, and I’m very proud of their effort. We just got the ball down to the one-yard line twice in the fourth quarter and couldn’t score either time. We just can’t do that.”
On the individual performances:
“We got a great effort from all of our kids. It was another big game out of Yama and Devo.”
On the second-half defense and missed opportunities:
“Our defense did better in the second half. We just have to score when we get those opportunities.”
On moving forward:
“Tomorrow’s a new day.”
