A-C Takes Second Without Allwein, Moves to 7-1

Annville-Cleona entered Tuesday’s second Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 match without the golfer who had led the Dutchmen to a dominant opening-day victory.

Sophomore Benjamin Allwein, one of Pennsylvania’s top high school golfers and the medalist in last week’s Section 4 opener, was away competing in an American Junior Golf Association event.

Without him, A-C’s already young lineup became even younger.

The Dutchmen responded by nearly winning anyway.

Annville-Cleona posted a four-player score of 326 at Conestoga Country Club, finishing second to Lancaster Catholic’s 319 in a match hosted by Lancaster Country Day. Pequea Valley was just behind A-C at 328, followed by Lancaster Country Day at 369 and Lancaster Mennonite at 411.

The result gave the Dutchmen three more head-to-head victories and moved them to 7-1 through the first two Section 4 matches.

A week after Benjamin Allwein earned medalist honors with a 73 at Bent Creek, another Allwein moved to the front of the A-C lineup.

Freshman Jefferson Allwein fired a 76 at Conestoga, tying Lancaster Catholic’s Ben Tomlinson for second overall. Pequea Valley’s Max Hershey earned medalist honors with a 74.

For Jefferson Allwein, the round continued an impressive introduction to high school golf. He opened his varsity career with a 77 and a tie for third at Bent Creek before shaving another stroke off his score Tuesday.

Behind him, A-C received another steady performance from its lone senior.

Aidan Lezon shot an 81 to finish seventh overall, while sophomore Will Kerwin carded an 84 to tie for eighth.

Then came one of the biggest improvements of the afternoon.

Freshman Jameson Rabena shot an 85 to tie for 10th overall and provide A-C’s fourth counting score. Rabena had opened the Section 4 season with a 111 at Bent Creek, making Tuesday’s round a 26-stroke improvement.

With Jefferson Allwein’s 76, Lezon’s 81, Kerwin’s 84, and Rabena’s 85, the Dutchmen combined for their 326 despite playing without their usual No. 1 golfer.

Freshman Trey Schrefler added a 90, while Kipton Heller finished with a 101.

Lancaster Catholic ultimately had enough depth to take the top spot. Tomlinson’s 76 was followed by Nolan Sweigert’s 78 and Max Straub’s 79, helping the Crusaders finish seven strokes ahead of A-C.

Pequea Valley remained right in the mix as well. Hershey’s medalist 74 led the Braves to a 328, just two strokes behind the Dutchmen.

For Annville-Cleona, Tuesday’s result offered a different test than its season opener.

With Benjamin Allwein in the lineup at Bent Creek, the Dutchmen put four golfers inside the top seven and cruised to an 18-stroke victory. One week later, A-C had to find a way to compete without the golfer who averaged 69.8 in Section 4 matches last season and finished eighth at the PIAA State Championships.

The Dutchmen didn’t get another victory, but their young lineup kept them very much in contention.

Jefferson Allwein finished two strokes off the individual lead. Lezon and Kerwin both placed inside the top eight, and Rabena made a significant jump to give A-C four golfers among the top 10 positions.

Through two matches, the Dutchmen sit at 7-1 and remain firmly in the early Section 4 race.
