New Covenant 53, Ephrata Mennonite 30
On Monday night, New Covenant hosted Ephrata Mennonite on the backend of a doubleheader that saw the boys take down Fairfield in an exciting game. The girls gave the crowd a show as well.
The Flames roared out to a 21-2 lead by the end of the 1st quarter, using strong defense and a balanced scoring attack led by McKenna Kantner with 7 points and Qynne Demler with 5.
The 2nd quarter was played much closer, with Ephrata Mennonite actually outscoring New Covenant 11-10 in the frame. Demler scored 8 points in the quarter as the Flames still carried a commanding 31-13 lead into halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, Ephrata Mennonite further carved into the Flames’ lead, but New Covenant remained in control and still led by 12 going into the final phase of the game.
In the 4th quarter, New Covenant left little doubt as to the outcome, pulling away down the stretch with Demler scoring 8 points and Kantner adding 5. The strong closing quarter sealed a 23-point win for the Flames.
Demler and Kantner each finished with 19 points. The junior Demler, who knocked down three three-pointers, became New Covenant’s all-time leading scorer in basketball (boys or girls). Kantner, a freshman, also connected on three three-pointers in the game.
New Covenant (18-1) will travel to Delone Catholic on Tuesday before finishing the regular season Thursday at Lititz Christian.
