Kasey Weimer

In the District 3 Quarterfinals on February 21st, Northern Lebanon trailed Berks Catholic by four points late in the game. However, the Lady Vikings stormed back to take the 36-33 victory. In the win, junior Kasey Weimer came up clutch, hitting 7-8 free throws in the 4th quarter, finishing the game with 11 points. As a result of her impact performance, Weimer was voted as a LebCo Athlete of the Week.

The win against Berks Catholic propelled Northern Lebanon to an eventual 3rd place finish in District 3, followed by two wins in the PIAA State Championship Tournament. In every game, Weimer loomed large, providing several key performances, including scoring 15 points (along with several free throws) in the double overtime win against Central Columbia in the opening round of States.

Following her game against Berks Catholic, Weimer said, “It was probably one of my better defensive performances of the year. Offensively, it was a little rough, but I pulled through and made some clutch free throws.”

While she started the game unable to find consistency, the steady nature of her game showed up when it mattered most. Weimer, who is known as “KK”, credited her team with allowing her to find success: “My teammates encouraged me the entire way to keep going even though the shots were not falling for me.”

Weimer has been a key piece of the Northern Lebanon team since her freshman year. She has tried to keep her goals measured, which is something that has allowed her to make adjustments that have made her one of the team’s go-to options on any given night. About her goals, Weimer said, “My goals this season have consisted of winning and improving my game. These are simple goals, really, but they are important. I like simple things. I get anxious easily and have learned that keeping things simple in basketball helps a great deal. I’ve tried this year to take more threes and jumpers. They were two of my weaker points in previous years.”

She pointed to what Coach Ken Battistelli has told her over the years, stating, “Coach Battistelli tells me all the time my job is to “strike.” It’s to put the ball in the hole on offense, and if I can’t, make a great pass. In order to win he wants me to “strike” every chance I get. He believes and trusts me enough with this job.”

While Weimer scored 10 points per game, she was one of four players to average near double-digit scoring totals. This style of play allowed Northern Lebanon to work to a 24-6 record this past season, finishing as one of the final eight teams in the 4A bracket.
Though the offensive numbers are easier to see in the scorebook, Weimer’s contributions were much deeper, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Known as an excellent defender, Weimer said, “On defense, I try and keep my energy high. I may not be the biggest or quickest, but I believe defense is all heart and effort.”

When it comes to her mentality, Weimer had to overcome a bad ankle sprain sustained last summer. This was a setback for her, both physically and mentally, given that it took away some of the speed she uses. She worked to rehab it and to take preventative measures that helped her recover and stave off further issues throughout the season.

Weimer’s main test, using her on-field IQ while dealing with the ankle injury, came during the field hockey season. While she was not able to cut as effectively, Weimer was able to make adjustments and ended up being named as a Lancaster Lebanon League Section 3 – 1st Team All-Star. Her selection included her leading the league in defensive saves with 19. With that in mind, Weimer recognizes that the experience made her a better athlete, citing Coach Battistelli, who has told her that she doesn’t “need to be fast,” just “smart.”

Weimer credits her strong support network for her success. This begins at home with her parents and her little sister. Her mother, also an accomplished basketball player, is the one who helped to shape her love of basketball and spends time breaking down each game. While her father may not be as knowledgeable on the basketball front, Weimer is thankful for his support, which includes spending extra time in the gym with her as she works to improve her game. Lastly, she sees her sister as her biggest critic and her biggest supporter. Like any sibling relationship, her sister is the first to point out what she has done wrong but makes up for it when cheering for her during games.

While she still has a year left in her high school journey, Weimer is looking ahead to her future plans where she intends to pursue either nursing or physical therapy. While in college, she also hopes to further continue her athletic career.

We congratulate Weimer and her Northern Lebanon teammates on a fantastic season. We also wish her a healthy and productive off-season ahead of her senior year.

One final thought from Weimer who expressed her sentiment towards the team’s seniors, who she wishes she could have another season playing beside. She said, ” I’m going to miss them a great deal, and next year won’t be the same without them. I know they’ll do great things in life and I wish them the best of luck in their journeys outside of Northern Lebanon.”
