#6 Big Spring 14, #2 Northern Lebanon 9 (District 3 Softball Class 4A – 3rd place)

Northern Lebanon hosted Big Spring on Thursday in a battle that would determine 3rd place in the District 3 AAAA, with the winner claiming the last spot in the PIAA State Playoffs.

In the 1st inning, Big Spring hopped out to an early 1-0 when the ball was lost in the bright sun on a day that brought perfect weather to the region. Pitcher Lynsie Mauser then shut the door on Big Spring in the 2nd, while Northern Lebanon was getting baserunners but could not convert. In the 3rd inning, they came through with three big runs courtesy of a Brooke Beamesderfer home run.

In the 5th, the Big Spring rallied. First, they had a two-RBI double to knot the game at three a piece. A hit batsman followed by another double made it 5-3. A pitching change at that point did not matter, as the Bull Dogs continued to roll with a home run and a double that stretched their lead to 7-3 by the end of the inning. The Vikings showed that they still had fight left in them, as Abby Palkovic and Addison Kubica singled before a Kiera Anspach double made the score 7-4.

Unfortunately the 6th inning began with two Northern Lebanon errors, followed by a single, triple, and two more errors that allowed the Bull Dogs to build a 12-4 lead. Big Spring then added two more runs in the 7th to run the score to 14-4. Northern Lebanon would make things interesting in their final at-bat as they rallied to put the pressure on Big Spring.

The five-run inning was valiant, but was unfortunately not enough to affect the outcome of the game. That said, the effort embodied the “never quit” attitude that allowed the Vikings to win nineteen games this season.

Northern Lebanon completes its season with a 19-6 record.
