Following their 3rd and 5th place finishes at the Lancaster Lebanon League Championship, Cedar Crest’s Viseth Meng and Joe Shkreli earned their spots in the District 3 Championships that were held at the Hershey Racquet Club on Friday and Saturday.
Shkreli started the tournament with a straight-set win over Wilson’s Austin Kohler (6-1, 7-6). After his first-round victory, he drew #2-ranked Hayden Koons of Dallastown. Koons took the match from Shkreli (6-2, 6-1), ending his Singles season. However, the junior gained valuable experience by winning a match at Districts.
Meng entered the tournament unranked, as he was not considered one of the top four players. In the first round, Meng played Central York’s Kai MacLennan and earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory. This set up a quarterfinal match-up with #3-ranked Ross Kluger of Cumberland Valley. After losing the first set, Meng rallied to take the next two and won the match (1-6, 6-4, 6-4) to earn his spot in Saturday’s semifinal round.
In the semis, Meng was matched up against Hayden Koons, the player who eliminated Shkreli. Meng, the underdog, won in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). With wins over the #2 and #3-ranked players, Meng moved into the District 3 Championship Round, where he was matched up against the two-time defending champion and reigning Lancaster Lebanon League Champion, Hempfield’s Cooper Lehman. Meng battled but lost the match (6-1, 6-0).
With his silver medal winning performance, Meng earned an automatic bid to be one of the sixteen players competing in the PIAA 3A State Championship Tournament that will take place Memorial Day Weekend.
On Monday, Meng and Shkreli will lead the Falcons as they host Dallastown in the semifinal round of the District 3 Team Tournament.
District 3 Doubles will be held next weekend.
