DISTRICT THREE PLAYOFFS
Thursday, February 29
Palmyra 31, Manheim Central 28
After winning their first-round game in a spectacular defensive effort over Cocalico, the Lady Cougars have been playing for the best seed possible as they are set to play in the PIAA State Championship Tournament. Thursday night’s game was against Manheim Central for 5th place.
Playing on their home court, Palmyra showcased their defensive skills early on, limiting the Barons to a mere 4 points in the 1st quarter. Keely Bowers, with two crucial three-pointers, and Addi Salus, with her 5-point contribution, helped the Cougars establish a 9-point lead. Despite Central’s efforts to narrow the gap in the 2nd quarter, Palmyra maintained a 20-15 lead at halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, the Barons launched a spirited comeback. As the 4th quarter began, Palmyra was clinging to a slim 26-25 lead. However, the Cougars rallied, holding Central to a mere 3 points in the final eight minutes. Clutch free throws from Bowers were instrumental in maintaining Palmyra’s lead.
Bowers ended the game with 13 points to lead the Cougars. The All-American Field Hockey player went 5-6 from the free throw line in the 2nd half of the game, including knocking down three down the final stretch of the game. Salus joined Bowers in double-figures, scoring 11 points.
Palmyra (18-8) will now wait for the District 7/WPIAL Championship game between Armstrong and South Fayette to see who they where they will open States on Saturday, March 9th. The Cougars will play the loser of the game, which will take place this Saturday evening.

Lebanon 64, Wilson 49
On Wednesday night, Lebanon played Wilson to determine 3rd place in District 3 – 6A. Winning would give Lebanon a home game against a WPIAL team to start States versus a loss that would send them on the road to play against a top District 1 squad. However, the primary question entering the game was how the Cedars would respond following Monday’s tough loss to Dallastown.
Any question about their resiliency was answered early, as Lebanon went on a major offensive to put up an impressive 25 points and held a 15-point lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Kailah Correa scored 13 points in the opening frame, hitting three three-pointers, showing that the Cedars would not back down when challenged by the #2 seeded Bulldogs. In the 2nd quarter, Wilson responded by taking a bite out of Lebanon’s lead, but Zariyah Whigham’s second three-ball of the 1st half would help to keep the Cedars in front by 10 points entering halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, 6 points from Liliana Harrison kept Wilson at arm’s length. However, the Bulldogs were closing in, causing a level of concern for the Lebanon faithful. What mattered was how the Cedars would respond, and again, they put their foot on the gas to break away again in the 4th quarter. In the final eight minutes, Lebanon scored 19 points, led by Whigham with 8. The Cedars also knocked down several key free throws, with Olive Brandt going 4-4 and Correa hitting both of her attempts. This strong finish gave the Cedars the 15-point win.
Correa finished the game with 21 points to fuel the Cedars. The junior hit three three-pointers and went 4-6 from the foul line. Whigham had an eerily similar line on her way to scoring 19 points. Also in double-figures was Harrison, scoring 11, and Brandt, scoring 10.
The Cedars (24-4) will now head into the PIAA State Championship Tournament, where they will host Peters Township. That game will take place on Friday, March 8th.

Palmyra 49, Red Land 20
In the last game of the regular season on February 10th, the Lady Cougars were denied a share of the Keystone Division Championship when they suffered a tough 44-33 loss to Red Land. On Tuesday, the two teams met again at Palmyra High School, this time in a seeding game that will determine where they will fall when the PIAA State Tournament begins.
Looking to exact some revenge for the loss two weeks ago, Palmyra showed determination from the outset. Addi Salus scored 5 points in the 1st quarter as the Palmyra defense bared its teeth and held the Patriots to just two points. The 2nd quarter was much the same, as Mya Doster came up big in scoring 8 points. At halftime, Palmyra led 25-7.
In the 3rd quarter, Red Land more than doubled their point total but could not find a way to slow down the Cougars. Keely Bowers and Emma Sibbach each had three-pointers as Palmyra built a 23-point advantage heading into the final eight minutes. In the 4th, the Patriots could still not crack the Cougar defense. With a three-pointer from Mackenzie Margut, the Cougars cruised to the 29-point win.
For the game, Salus led Palmyra with 16 points. Doster scored 13 points, as she was dominant down low. She also drew several fouls and converted on those opportunities by going 7-10 from the free throw line.
Palmyra (17-8) move on to the 5th place game, which will be played on Thursday night when they host Manheim Central.
