After winning their first-round game in a spectacular defensive effort over Cocalico, the Lady Cougars have been playing for the best seed possible as they are set to play in the PIAA State Championship Tournament. Thursday night’s game was against Manheim Central for 5th place.

Playing on their home court, Palmyra showcased their defensive skills early on, limiting the Barons to a mere 4 points in the 1st quarter. Keely Bowers, with two crucial three-pointers, and Addi Salus, with her 5-point contribution, helped the Cougars establish a 9-point lead. Despite Central’s efforts to narrow the gap in the 2nd quarter, Palmyra maintained a 20-15 lead at halftime.

In the 3rd quarter, the Barons launched a spirited comeback. As the 4th quarter began, Palmyra was clinging to a slim 26-25 lead. However, the Cougars rallied, holding Central to a mere 3 points in the final eight minutes.  Clutch free throws from Bowers were instrumental in maintaining Palmyra’s lead.

Bowers ended the game with 13 points to lead the Cougars. The All-American Field Hockey player went 5-6 from the free throw line in the 2nd half of the game, including knocking down three down the final stretch of the game. Salus joined Bowers in double-figures, scoring 11 points.

Palmyra (18-8) will now wait for the District 7/WPIAL Championship game between Armstrong and South Fayette to see who they where they will open States on Saturday, March 9th. The Cougars will play the loser of the game, which will take place this Saturday evening.
