Girls Basketball Outlook: New Covenant

  New Covenant Flames 2022-2023 Girls Basketball

The 2021-2022 season was a banner year for New Covenant Girls Basketball, as they made their fifth straight trip to the District 3 Playoffs and then became the first team in the school’s history to make the PIAA State Playoffs.  This was accomplished by a senior-heavy group making up four of the five starting spots taking the floor each game.

For any school losing four starts is a tough proposition.  For a Class A, small school, like New Covenant, the concept is even more difficult.  Coach Nicole Buffenmeyer understands this challenge, but is also optimistic as to what the future holds for the group of young women that have made this year’s roster.  She is quite clear when she says that the number one goal of the program is for each player to “learn leadership, confidence, and determination” and to develop those skills through coming together as a team.  As most of this year’s athletes have not spent much time playing together during games, the trust and relationships they build will aid their ability to find their offensive rhythm.  For now, there will be heavy reliance on Camryn Backus and Ella VanderPloog, the two seniors, to take strong leadership roles in the offensive scheme.  Beyond that, it will come down to the development of the skills that will be necessary for the Flames to continue their winning ways.  Coach Buffenmeyer knows that this group is willing to put in the work in order to make sure it happens.
