Palmyra Girls Edge Hershey on Tiebreaker, Boys Fall in Tight Section Meet

In a highly competitive Keystone Division showdown on Tuesday at Hershey, the Palmyra track and field teams came away with a split against the Trojans. The Cougars’ girls squad battled Hershey to a 75-75 draw before being awarded the dual meet victory on a tiebreaker thanks to more first-place finishes, while the boys dropped a close 91-59 decision. The official results sheet lists the boys score at 91-59 and the girls score at 75-75.

Girls: Palmyra 75, Hershey 75 (Palmyra won tiebreaker)

Palmyra’s girls did enough across the board to force the tie on the scoreboard, then claimed the meet based on first-place finishes. Maddy Waldron led the way with a huge day, winning both the 100m and 200m while also helping Palmyra win the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. Waldron took the 100m in 13.25 and the 200m in 26.28, while the Cougars also finished first in the 4x100m relay in 50.72 and the 4x400m relay in 4:22.69.

Palmyra also got major contributions from Ella Stuart, who won the 400m in 1:04.78 and ran on the winning 4x400m relay, while Helena Baker posted a season-best 17.83 to win the 100m hurdles and added a second-place finish in the 300m hurdles. Isabella Owens swept the horizontal jumps by winning the long jump at 16’4.75″ and the triple jump at 31’10”, and Ashton Brandt earned her first win of the spring by taking the javelin with a personal-best throw of 90’7″ while also finishing third in the high jump.

Hershey made Palmyra work for every point, especially in the distance events. Sophia Kim won both the 800m and 1600m, while Evy Winder captured the 3200m and also placed second in the 1600m and third in the 800m. The Trojans also got wins from Biñya Hitchcock in the 300m hurdles, Lydia Grana in the high jump, and a share of first in the pole vault from Madeline O’Connell.
