Palmyra Sweeps Red Land Behind Strong Sprinting, Relay Wins, and Field Event Success
With temperatures around 80 degrees on Tuesday at Red Land, Palmyra and Red Land competed in a warm early-season dual meet that featured several standout individual efforts and a strong overall showing from the visiting Cougars.
By the end of it, Palmyra came away with a sweep, as the Cougar girls earned an 84-66 victory while the boys followed with an 88-62 win.
Girls: Palmyra 84, Red Land 66
Palmyra’s girls put together a strong all-around effort, using sprint success, relay wins, and key field-event points to help secure the team victory. Maddy Waldron led one of the top individual days of the meet, winning the 100m, 200m, and running on Palmyra’s winning 4x100m relay.
The Cougars also got a big field-event performance from Abbie Vates, who delivered a personal-best throw of 105 feet to win the javelin. Isabella Owens added two more 1st-place finishes by sweeping the horizontal jumps, taking the long jump and triple jump.
Palmyra also picked up victories in the 3200m relay, the 400m dash from Ella Stuart, and the 1600m relay. That balance across the sprints, relays, and field events helped the Cougars steadily build enough points to take control of the meet.
Red Land still produced several strong efforts in defeat. Evelyn Hassler won both the 1600m and 3200m, Camryn Segura captured the 300m hurdles, Alexa Shade won the 800m, Julia Rook swept the throws in shot put and discus, while Lyvia Snyder and Rylee Ryan added wins in the high jump and pole vault.

Palmyra’s boys controlled much of the meet on the track and got several major performances from their top athletes to help finish off the sweep. Cornelius Cummings put together a huge day by contributing to four victories, running on the winning 3200m relay, winning the 1600m and 800m, and anchoring the Cougars’ winning 1600m relay.
Travis McDannell also turned in one of Palmyra’s top efforts. He ran a season-best 11.0 to win the 100m, later added a win in the 200m, and anchored Palmyra’s winning 4x100m relay team. That relay of Aaron Villafane, Connor Anderson, Chris Campisano, and Travis McDannell also posted a season-best 44.6.
Palmyra added more 1st-place finishes from Roman Wamsher in the 400m, Josh Tshudy in the discus, and Jaxton Barger, who tied his outdoor personal best by clearing 14’6” to win the pole vault. Combined with their depth in the middle-distance events and relays, the Cougars had enough to separate in the team score.
Red Land countered with several strong performances of its own. Haydin Ort won both hurdle races and the triple jump, Tyson Delaney captured the 3200m, Levi Green won the shot put, Nathan Jackson took the javelin, and Carter Stratton claimed victories in both the long jump and high jump.
