Cedar Crest Edged in Extras by Lampeter-Strasburg
Cedar Crest has shown some early promise this season with a young roster that is beginning to develop into a contender. On Monday, the Falcons carried a 3-1 record on the road to face Lampeter-Strasburg, a team that reached the 2nd round of Districts last season. In the end, Cedar Crest battled all the way into extra innings before falling 6-5 on the final play of the game.
The Falcons got off to a strong start in the top of the 1st. Elli Malinoski came through with a run-scoring single that plated two and gave Cedar Crest an early 2-0 lead.
Lampeter-Strasburg answered quickly in the bottom half. Paige Baxter singled down the left field line to bring in a run, Kinsley Ferreira followed with an RBI single to center, Cedar Crest committed an error that allowed another run to score, and Isabelle King added an RBI single down the left field line as the hosts surged in front 4-2.
Cedar Crest worked its way back ahead in the top of the 5th. Malinoski ripped an RBI double down the right field line, Kate Poorman followed with a run-scoring single to center, and Ava Rosario laid down a sacrifice bunt that brought home another run to put the Falcons back in front 5-4.
Lampeter-Strasburg answered again in the bottom of the 5th, tying the game at 5-5 after Cedar Crest committed an error. From there, both sides settled in and the game moved into the 8th still deadlocked.
In the bottom of the 8th, Lilly Kuhns delivered the final blow with a walk-off single that scored the winning run and ended the game at 6-5.
Malinoski paced Cedar Crest at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. She singled in the 1st, doubled in the 5th, and added another single in the 7th. Ali Groff also helped create pressure with two walks, while the Falcons showed patience throughout the lineup by drawing five free passes. Cedar Crest was also aggressive on the bases, stealing five bags, with Malinoski accounting for two of them.
In the circle, Addison Nolen went the distance for the Falcons and was charged with the tough-luck loss. She allowed 10 hits and 6 runs, just 2 earned, over 7.2 innings while walking 2 and striking out 1.
For Lampeter-Strasburg, Ferreira led the way with 2 RBI from the middle of the order. Baxter and Kuhns each collected 3 hits, and the hosts stayed active on the basepaths with 6 stolen bases. Kuhns and Ferreira each had multiple steals. Natalie Hill started in the circle and gave Lampeter-Strasburg six strong innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, 1 earned, while striking out 12 and walking 3.
Cedar Crest falls to 3-2 and will look to get back into the win column when it hosts Penn Manor on Wednesday.
