Cedar Crest 66, Muhlenberg 60 [OT]
Following a 13-9 regular season, the young Cedar Crest Falcons entered their PIAA District 3 playoff first-round game on Tuesday night as #13 seeded underdogs against the #4 seeded Muhlenberg Mules.
Early on, it looked like this one would be a closely played contest throughout. It was.
The 1st quarter ended with Cedar Crest taking a slim 18-16 lead over the home team. Sophomore Jemar Pauleus hit a 3-pointer on his way to 7 early points, while fellow sophomore Steven Reyes knocked down a pair of threes for 6.
Muhlenberg responded in the 2nd quarter to take a 35-31 lead into halftime. Despite being outscored 19-13 in the frame, senior Cam Tirado (5 points) and junior Jaxon Bechtold (4) kept the Falcons within reach.
Out of the break, the Cedar Crest defense slowed the Mules, as the Falcons won the 3rd quarter 12-10. Offensively, it was Pauleus again carrying the load with 7 more points. Freshman Jayden Truss also showed his mettle, drilling a 3-pointer to announce his arrival.
Down 46-44 entering the 4th, the Falcons knew it was still anyone’s ballgame. With the defensive intensity picking up on both ends, points were tough to come by. Still, Pauleus found a way, scoring 7 more as Cedar Crest made its case down the stretch.
Even with that push, Crest still trailed 54-52 in the waning seconds. One final shot attempt came from Truss, who drew a foul on a 3-point try. In enemy territory, the freshman hit the first, missed the second, then calmly buried the third to tie it and send the game to overtime.
Once in OT, the Falcons took flight. Junior Antonio Tirado scored 9 points in the extra session, while Cam Tirado and sophomore Jackson Smith each went 2-for-2 from the line as Cedar Crest closed out a 66-60 upset victory.
Pauleus finished with 23 points, adding a 3-pointer and going 2-for-2 at the line. Antonio Tirado joined him in double figures with 11. As a team, the Falcons went 17-for-23 from the charity stripe.
Cedar Crest (14-11) will now move on to the District 3 quarterfinals, where it will face #12 seeded William Penn (York), which upset Reading. That game will take place Friday night in York.
With the first-round win, the Falcons have extended their season by at least two games. A quarterfinal victory sends them to the semifinals and clinches a spot in the PIAA state tournament. With a loss, they will move into the consolation bracket.
