High Point Baptist 65, New Covenant 60

On Tuesday night, New Covenant hosted High Point in the quarterfinals of the CCAC in a game that was broadcast as part of our LebCo Sports Live Series. The Flames entered the night having already set a program record for wins in a season (17) and were looking to add one more to advance to the CCAC semifinals, but they knew they would have their hands full with a High Point team that is the defending District 3 champion. The two teams met back in January, when the Flames rallied in the 4th quarter for a 59-53 win. This one was going to be a battle again.

High Point came out with intensity, taking a 20-12 lead after one behind 8 points from Reagan Wodicka. New Covenanttried to answer offensively with Grayden Summers carrying the load early, scoring 7 in the opening quarter.

In the 2nd, High Point continued to build its advantage with a balanced scoring effort, extending the lead and taking a 14-point cushion into halftime.

Coming out of the break, New Covenant responded with its best stretch of the night. Senior Ben Rhine knocked down three triples in the 3rd quarter as the Flames stormed back, cutting the deficit all the way to two before a buzzer-beating three pushed High Point’s lead back to five heading into the 4th. Ironically, the Flames also trailed by five entering the 4th quarter in the first meeting.

The rally continued down the stretch, with Talan Vanderploog scoring 7 points in the final quarter as the teams traded possessions late. But with the 4th finishing even at 14-14, High Point was able to protect its lead to the horn and close out a 65-60 win.

Summers led New Covenant with 17 points, going 9-for-11 at the free throw line. Rhine finished with 16, while freshman Braden Demler added 10. High Point was led by junior Nate Lewis, who scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers.

New Covenant (17-6) will now await the start of the District 3 playoffs.
