On Saturday, the Mid Penn Cross Country Championships took place at Big Spring High School in Newville, Cumberland County. In the AAA classification, there were a total of seventeen teams battling it out for the available spots at the District 3 Championships. Both Palmyra squads raced well and have earned the chance to line up as a complete team again at Big Spring on Saturday, October 26th.
The Girls finished in 7th place to claim one of the nine available spots at Districts that are afforded to Mid Penn teams. The Lady Cougars benefitted from a strong pack of runners that crossed the line in succession with seniors Sarah Sipe (20:44, 20th) and Avery Rohrer (20:47, 24th), followed by sophomore Amber McCurdy (20:57, 28th). Junior Andrea Cooper (22:00, 51st) and sophomore Leah Senft (22:13, 56th) closed out the scoring to punch Palmyra’s ticket to Districts.
The Boys finished 8th, claiming the last spot at Districts given to AAA teams out of the Mid Penn. The Cougars were led by junior Cornelius Cummings (16:36, 15th), who led the charge. Fellow junior Joshua Miller (17:02, 25th) also came up big to help keep the score low enough to earn the team a spot at Districts. The scoring was rounded out by senior Cohen Claar (17:43, 54th), junior Nathan Keiner (18:40, 80th), and senior Ethan Yorty (19:12, 91st). The Cougars finished 16 points ahead of Shippensburg.
On Tuesday, the rest of the LebCo teams will compete at the Lancaster Lebanon League Championships. For the second straight year, the event will be held at South Hills Park in South Lebanon Township.
