Gavin Mesón

For New Covenant senior Gavin Mesón, the 2026 soccer season has been about more than finding the back of the net. While the goals have continued to pile up, the Flames’ standout has also reached a significant career milestone while helping his team find its stride heading into the postseason.

That was especially evident during the week of October 5th, when Mesón delivered another impressive offensive performance, highlighted by a 4-goal effort in New Covenant’s 7-1 victory over Veritas Academy on Friday, October 9th. His scoring ability and contributions to the Flames’ attack earned him LebCo Athlete of the Week honors.

The week also included an accomplishment that had been building throughout his high school career. Mesón reached the 200-point milestone, adding another achievement to a résumé that has made him one of New Covenant’s most productive offensive players.

Mesón was quick to recognize teammate Lincoln Hess for his role in the milestone, crediting Hess for the effort that led to the historic point.

“Lincoln Hess tirelessly ran and assisted my 200th point,” Mesón said.

The milestone was another highlight in a season that began with Mesón making an immediate impact. In New Covenant’s season-opening 4-1 victory over York Country Day, the senior accounted for all 4 Flames goals, providing an early indication of the offensive production that would follow.

Mesón has continued that production throughout the fall, recording 24 goals and 7 assists. His contributions have extended beyond scoring, as he has also helped create opportunities for teammates while serving as an important connection between New Covenant’s midfield and attack.

That versatility has been valuable for a Flames squad that has experienced its share of challenges throughout the season.

Mesón acknowledged that New Covenant endured a difficult stretch during the middle of the season before finding its form down the stretch. The improvement helped the Flames close the regular season with an 11-5-1 record and qualify for the Commonwealth Christian Athletic Conference playoffs.

The Flames carried that momentum into Monday’s CCAC playoff matchup against Harrisburg Christian, earning a 3-1 victory to advance in the conference tournament. New Covenant held a 1-0 halftime advantage before adding 2 more goals in the second half. Mesón contributed an assist, while sophomore Wyatt Fisher was among the goal scorers.

The victory brought New Covenant another step closer to the goal Mesón established entering his senior season: winning the CCAC Championship. The Flames have also positioned themselves for a District 3 Class 1A Tournament berth, providing another opportunity to extend their season.

For Mesón, his role in reaching those goals is straightforward. He wants to help generate the offense the Flames need to win, whether by finishing scoring opportunities himself or creating chances for those around him.

That team-first perspective also shapes what he enjoys most about competing. Asked about his favorite part of participating in sports, his answer was simple: “Being with my team.”

Away from the field, Mesón enjoys spending time with friends and listening to country music. He also shared a personal connection to Argentina through his father, who is Argentinian.

Looking beyond high school, Mesón plans to attend Liberty University, where he is interested in pursuing trade-related education and business studies.

For now, his attention remains on finishing his New Covenant career on a high note. After a challenging middle portion of the season, the Flames have responded with improved play and earned an opportunity to compete for postseason championships.

For Mesón, reaching 200 career points is an accomplishment worth celebrating, but helping New Covenant make a memorable postseason run would provide an even more meaningful finish.

Congratulations to Gavin on earning LebCo Athlete of the Week honors, and best of luck to him and the Flames as they continue their postseason journey.
