Northern Lebanon Moves to 7-3, L-S Stays Perfect

The second round of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3 golf season took place Monday afternoon, with sunny skies and bright conditions greeting the golfers at Donegal’s Highlands Golf Club.

Traditional Section 3 power Lampeter-Strasburg remained perfect, posting a 324 to sweep the field for the second straight match and improve to 10-0. Host Donegal took second at 333, while Northern Lebanon finished third with a 360. Octorara (370) and ELCO (379) followed, while Lebanon did not have the four golfers necessary to record a team score.

For Northern Lebanon, the third-place finish followed a runner-up performance in last week’s opener and moved the Vikings to 7-3, tied with Donegal for second behind L-S.

Sophomore Ashton Yeager led the Vikings with an 87, good for eighth overall. Fellow sophomore Braden Demler was two strokes back with an 89, tying for 10th.

Sophomore Christian Rizzo followed with a 91, while freshman Jacob Anspach shot a 93. Those four rounds combined for Northern Lebanon’s 360. Tyler Hornberger added a 97 and Blake Burdick finished with a 107.

ELCO finished fifth Monday and moved to 3-7 through the first two section matches.

Senior Grant Wenger paced the Raiders with a 90, followed by fellow senior James Dolan at 93 and sophomore Jackson Smeltzer at 96. Brady Habecker and Boston Weiler each shot 100, while Owen Halpin added a 105.

Lebanon again competed with three golfers, but junior Trinity Leeper turned in an encouraging round for the Cedars.

After shooting a 102 in last week’s opener, Leeper lowered her score by 13 strokes with an 89 at Highlands. Freshmen Noah Cotto and Landyn Strickler finished with rounds of 121 and 146, respectively.

At the front of the field, Donegal’s Ryan Smeltz earned medalist honors with a 73, five strokes ahead of L-S’s Gabe Trout. The Pioneers countered with four golfers shooting 83 or better to post the day’s low team score and maintain control of the early Section 3 standings.

Section 3 competition resumes Monday, August 31, when Northern Lebanon hosts the third section match of the season at Blue Mountain Golf Course.

Northern Lebanon will return to action Tuesday for a non-league matchup with Minersville in what could appropriately be called a “Coach George Special.” Vikings golf coach Chris George also coaches the Minersville boys basketball team during the winter and led the Miners to the Schuylkill League Championship last season.
