Northern Lebanon Edges Donegal in Crucial Section 3 Showdown
Despite Addison Hollenbach recording her 100th career hit and Stephanie Palkovic going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, Northern Lebanon suffered a setback loss to Hershey on Friday. The Vikings bounced back in a big spot Monday returning home and answering the call with a 4-3 win over Donegal in a high-stakes Section 3 matchup. Northern Lebanon improved to 10-3 with the victory and strengthened its position in the section race.
Donegal struck first in the top of the 1st. Jordin Meyers doubled to center field to drive in a run, and the visitors added another on a passed ball to take a 2-0 lead.
The Vikings chipped away and eventually pulled even in the 3rd. With the game tightening up, Hollenbach came through with a single down the right field line that helped Northern Lebanon tie it at 2-2.
Northern Lebanon moved in front in the 4th when Makenzie West delivered a single that gave the Vikings a 3-2 edge. Donegal answered again in the top of the 5th, taking advantage of a Northern Lebanon error to knot the game at 3-3, but the Vikings had one more response in them.
In the bottom of the 5th, Sophia Roye delivered the biggest hit of the afternoon. With the game tied, Roye singled home the go-ahead run to put Northern Lebanon back in front for good at 4-3.
That was enough for Hollenbach, who took care of the rest in the circle. The right-hander worked all 7 innings, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs while striking out 10 and walking 3. None of Donegal’s runs were earned.
At the plate, Hollenbach also led the Vikings’ offense from the No. 3 spot, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. West added a 2-for-3 day and an RBI, while Roye finished with a hit, a run scored, and the game-winning RBI. Ryleigh Hopkins scored twice, and Mykenah Johnson and Addison Kubica each added a hit.
Donegal got a strong table-setting effort from Nyah Gibbs, who went 3-for-3 from the top of the lineup. Meyers drove in a run and took the loss in the circle after going the distance, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 8 hits while striking out 9 and walking 3.
Northern Lebanon (10-3) is now 6-0 in Section 3, while Donegal is now 4-2 with both losses coming to the Vikings. Northern Lebanon will hit the road Wednesday to face Garden Spot.
