Hempfield Holds Off Cedar Crest After Late Falcon Push

Cedar Crest entered Monday’s game having already matched its win total from last season, another sign that the Falcons are ready to compete. That showed again on the road at Hempfield, where Cedar Crest stayed within striking distance throughout before mounting a late rally in a 5-3 loss.

Hempfield grabbed the early edge with 2 runs in the 1st inning, then added single runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th to build a 5-0 lead. Cedar Crest answered in the top of the 4th, trimming the deficit with a 3-run inning to get right back into the game.

The Falcons continued to battle from there, but Hempfield was able to keep Cedar Crest off the board the rest of the way and hold on.

Mia Lutz helped lead the Cedar Crest offense with 2 hits, including a double, and scored a run. Ali Groff also collected 2 hits and scored once, while Ava Rosario drove in 2 runs. Elli Malinoski added 2 hits, and Angie Orosco chipped in a hit and scored a run as the Falcons finished with 8 hits.

Addison Nolen went the distance in the circle for Cedar Crest, allowing 7 hits and 5 runs, 3 of them earned, while striking out 2 and walking 4 over 6 innings.

Hempfield finished with 7 hits in the win. Rose Wendel did major damage at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and 3 RBI. Kiara Rodriguez added a hit and a run scored, while Jenna Ernst, Khloe Rodriguez, Claire Ditzlerand Trina Beck each contributed a hit.

Wendel also picked up the win in the circle, working all 7 innings while allowing 8 hits and 3 runs. She struck out 9 and walked 3.

Cedar Crest is now 4-4 and will travel to Warwick on Wednesday.
