Dutchmen Roll Past Tide to Open Section 4 Play

Annville-Cleona entered Wednesday’s road game against the Columbia Tide seeking its 4th win in 5 tries to start the season. All 3 of the Dutchmen’s victories had already come via the 10-run rule, and that trend continued in the Section 4 opener. Annville-Cleona kept the offense rolling and wrapped up an 18-0 win after just 3 innings.

The Dutchmen wasted no time taking control. In the top of the 1st, Annville-Cleona exploded for 10 runs and immediately put Columbia in a deep hole. Savannah Milian drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, Jayde Cruz followed with another RBI walk, and Nia Hafey delivered the biggest swing of the inning with a bases-clearing triple. Abigail Evans added an RBI double, and the Dutchmen also got runs on a steal of home, a pair of Columbia errors, and another bases-loaded walk from Temperance Brubaker.

Annville-Cleona kept pouring it on in the 2nd, scoring 6 more runs on 5 hits. Hafey drew a walk that brought home a run, Evans singled in another, Zoe Miller lined a 2-run single, Brubaker added an RBI single, and Milian was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run. By then, the Dutchmen had fully broken the game open.

The final 2 runs came in the 3rd. Summer Light singled home a run, and another Columbia error allowed Annville-Cleona to add one more as the Dutchmen finished off another shortened victory.

At the plate, Hafey led the way with 4 RBI on 2 hits, including her 1st-inning triple. Brubaker also drove in 4 runs, while Evans joined Hafey with 2 hits from the top of the lineup. Cruz showed patience all afternoon and finished with 3 walks as part of a team-wide effort that produced 14 free passes.

In the circle, Brubaker got the start and was sharp over 2 innings, allowing just 1 hit while striking out 5. Miller handled the 3rd and delivered one of the day’s best moments, throwing an immaculate inning by striking out the side on 9 pitches. Annville-Cleona also played a clean defensive game behind its pitchers, committing no errors. Peyton Elder led the way defensively with 7 chances.

For Columbia, Addison Emel recorded the Tide’s lone hit.

Annville-Cleona, now 4-1, will host Pequea Valley on Monday.
