After defeating Lancaster Catholic to claim 3rd place in District 3, Northern Lebanon earned a first-round state matchup with District 4 champion Central Columbia. On Saturday, the Lady Vikings took to the road to Bloomsburg to face a Blue Jay team that entered the night riding a 27-game winning streak.
The opening quarter gave Northern Lebanon reason to believe.
Senior Hayley Sheroky, who has been slowed by injury for a large portion of the season, came out aggressive and got in on the scoring early. Sheroky knocked down a 3-pointer and added another field goal as the Lady Vikings jumped in front 9-7 after one.
In the 2nd quarter, Central Columbia showed exactly why it hasn’t lost all season. The Blue Jays clamped down defensively and turned defense into offense, outpacing Northern Lebanon 14-3 over the eight minutes to take a 21-12 lead into halftime.
Trailing by nine entering the 3rd, Northern Lebanon was able to reset and settle in. The Vikings played the quarter to a near draw, allowing only one point to be added to the deficit. Offensively, Sheroky scored 4 points, while Zeah Zerman connected on a 3-pointer as Northern Lebanon kept itself within striking distance.
Going into the 4th quarter down 10, the Lady Vikings continued to battle. Sheroky and Zerman each hit 3-pointers, and senior Kasey Weimer added 5 points as Northern Lebanon won the quarter 11-6. The late push made it interesting, but it wasn’t enough to erase the damage from the second quarter, as Central Columbia held on for a 35-30 win.
Sheroky finished with a team-high 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Zerman added 6 points, while seniors Weimerand Saoirse Phillips scored 5 and 4, respectively. Central Columbia was led by sophomore Quinlan Blake, who finished with 16 points.
The loss ends Northern Lebanon’s season, as the Lady Vikings finish 18-8. Best of luck to the seniors, led by Sheroky, Weimer, Phillips, and Mackenzie Miller, each of whom played key roles in the Northern Lebanon program over the past four years.
