On Saturday, twenty-four Lancaster-Lebanon schools competed at the Elizabethtown Optimist Tournament, an event that serves as the unofficial junior high league wrestling championship. Lebanon County wrestlers had a strong showing, racking up a total of 49 medals across the girls and boys brackets. This list included ten gold medals!
The Northern Lebanon boys finished as the top team for the first time in school history. Maybe they’re on their way to being considered a wrestling school. Kidding, of course — but with the amount of success the Vikings have enjoyed in recent years, it’s hard to believe this is their first team title at this event. Is it a sign of even greater things to come for Viking nation?
Northern Lebanon led the county with 17 total medalists (9 boys, 8 girls). However, they were not alone in finding a large amount of success in the tournament. ELCO finished with 13 medals (6 boys, 7 girls), and Cedar Crest with 10 (1 boys, 9 girls). Lebanon finished with 5 medalists (2 boys, 3 girls), while Annville-Cleona had 4 on the podium (3 boys, 1 girls). On the girls side, Northern Lebanon placed 2nd as a team, while Cedar Crest finished 4th.
LebCo’s ten first-place finishers were Bentley Landis (ELCO), Dale Kohr (ELCO), Hunter Lebo (ELCO), and Kayson McQuate (Northern Lebanon) on the boys side, plus Alana Bauza (Cedar Crest), Katie McCracken (Cedar Crest), Lilyanna Ortenzi (ELCO), Kayleigh Heagy (Lebanon), Aura King (Northern Lebanon), and Emily Dechert (Northern Lebanon) on the girls side.
One of the weekend’s biggest storylines came from Northern Lebanon’s Dalia Crane, who finished 1st in the girls bracket last year and chose to compete against the boys this time around — and still reached the finals, placing 2nd. In doing so, she became the first female finalist on the boys side in the 50-year history of the event.
We look forward to seeing many of your names at the varsity level!
