Oliver Funck

During the week of competition, Annville-Cleona senior Oliver Funck continued to build on one of the most consistent careers in the Dutchmen wrestling program. Funck went undefeated on the week, highlighted by a 5-0 showing at the James Buchanan Tournament, where he reached the 100-career win milestone. His performance earned him recognition as LebCo Athlete of the Week.

Reflecting on the achievement, “Ollie” said the moment carried special meaning. “I was really excited to get my 100 wins, and it felt great that working hard paid off to reach my goals.” He didn’t slow down after hitting the milestone, either—following up his 100th win by pinning his next opponent from Columbia.

The strong finish was no fluke. Through the early part of the season, Funck is off to a 9-0 start, with four of his last five victories coming by technical fall. That dominance has put him squarely on track for his primary goal this winter: earning a trip to Hershey as a PIAA State Qualifier.

That goal carries added motivation after last season, when Funck posted a 37-11 record and finished 6th at Regionals, narrowly missing a berth to States. The experience only sharpened his focus heading into his senior year.

Beyond his individual success, Funck has embraced his role as a leader within the Annville-Cleona program. “I’ve been in a significant leadership role on the team the past few years and helped our younger kids transition to a more competitive high school environment,” he said. That leadership is part of the Dutchmen’s push to return to the District team tournament this season.

Funck is quick to credit his coaches for helping him stay prepared. “My coaches always make sure me and the team are match-ready and able to become the best wrestlers we can be,” he said. Wrestling excellence also runs in the family—his brother Hayden Funck, now one of his coaches, was also a 100-win wrestler and competed at the collegiate level.

While wrestling is front and center during the winter, Funck is a true multi-sport standout. He also competes in cross country and track, finding success at a high level. This past fall, he helped lead the Dutchmen to the District 3 Championship, finishing 4th in the AA race, and followed that up with an impressive 9th-place finish at the PIAA State Championships.

Looking ahead, Funck plans to continue competing in cross country and track at the collegiate level while majoring in civil engineering. When he does find time away from training and schoolwork, he enjoys watching sports—and proudly supports all Philadelphia teams.

At the heart of it all, Funck values the challenge that athletics provide. “I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment after pushing myself to do hard things,” he said. Given his preference of sports, Funck is not one who has shied away from doing the hard things.

Congratulations to Funck on being named LebCo Athlete of the Week, and best of luck as he continues working toward his goal of finishing his high school wrestling career competing under the bright lights of the Giant Center.
