District 3 Championship Meet
On Saturday, the District 3 Championship Cross Country Meet took place at Big Spring High School, with runners vying to qualify for next weekend’s PIAA State Championship Meet. When all of the racing was done, our local Lebanon County athletes were well represented among the top finishers, highlighted by Cedar Crest’s Travis Furmanski’s dominant win in the AAA Boys race and Annville-Cleona Boys winning the AA Team Championship for the 3rd straight year.
Furmanski, who has put together an elite season, outran the entire field with a time of 15:23.9, finishing nearly 17 full seconds ahead of his next closest competitor. His win emphasized that he is among the athletes who could challenge for State gold next Saturday. His performance also helped the Falcons to a 3rd place team finish, qualifying them for States, with Wyatt Wolfe (41st, 16:36.8), Zachary Margut (43rd, 16:38.1), Hayden Snavely (57th, 16:53.7), and James Engle (69th, 17:04.3) closing out the scoring. Cedar Crest finished just behind Manheim Township and Carlisle to secure their spot in Hershey.
On the AA Boys side, Annville-Cleona reigned supreme yet again. The Dutchmen were fueled by top performances, including David Moran (2nd, 16:09.7), closely followed by Oliver Funck (4th, 16:21.5) and Benjamin Boyd (9th, 16:29.5). Annville-Cleona closed out the scoring with Luke Tshudy (29th, 17:23.7) and Hunter Troxell (56th, 18:04.2), securing the team title.
Northern Lebanon was led by two top-20 finishes from Luke Hentz (11th, 16:36.5) and Thaddeus Raub (17th, 16:51.3), along with Anthony Frederick (22nd, 17:06.1), allowing the Vikings to place 3rd as a team and punch their ticket to States. They will be joined by ELCO’s Max Frederick (14th, 16:45.0) and Cru Frederick (21st, 17:03.9), the sophomore brothers who each earned individual State qualifying spots.
Returning to AAA, among those who qualified for States were Cornelius Cummings (9th, 15:59.3) and Joshua Miller(29th, 16:18.5).
On the Girls side, Annville-Cleona led the way with a 2nd place finish in the AA race, just behind Pequea Valley. The runner-up status still earns them a berth at States. They were led by the Stellmach sisters, Mackenzie Stellmach (3rd, 19:14.8), who earned a bronze medal, and Lucy Stellmach (8th, 19:43.3). Also medaling for the Dutchmen was Caitlin Shay (14th, 20:44.2), as a strong pack followed to finish out the scoring with Emily Shearer (26th, 21:24.2), Leah Rotunda (27th, 21:25.5), and Bridget Funck (28th, 21:26.5).
Annville-Cleona will not be alone at States. Cedar Crest’s Eliana Schneider (18th, 19:05.3) earned her 4th straight State invitation in the AAA race, while Northern Lebanon’s Zoey Bouchard (24th, 21:19.6) also qualified in the AA race. For those wondering, Cedar Crest senior Makenzie Wamsher, whose performance at the Lancaster Lebanon League Championship earned her LebCo Athlete of the Week honors, was not able to participate in this race due to an injury.
