This article was updated from an earlier version where it was incorrectly stated that Annville-Cleona’s Hafey was the runner-up. HUGE APOLOGIES to Nia!

The best of Lebanon County girls tennis gathered Saturday at Annville-Cleona for the annual County Championship, and by the end of the day there was little doubt about which program stood atop the local scene.

Palmyra entered as the favorite for the team crown, and the Cougars more than lived up to the billing, coming close to a full sweep of the day’s events.

The only thing stopping a Palmyra sweep was Annville-Cleona’s Nia Hafey defeating Palmyra’s Mia Fair to claim the #1 Singles title. For the junior Hafey, the County Championship marked her second major milestone of the week, coming shortly after she notched her 50th career win. Hafey reached the finals by battling through a hard-fought semifinal against Northern Lebanon’s Elsie Shuey, while Fair earned her spot with a challenging victory over Lebanon’s Scarlett Meyer.

Palmyra added more hardware when junior Anna Rashid claimed the #2 Singles Championship, beating ELCO’s Delaine Hartman in the final.

Doubles play also belonged to the Cougars. The team of junior Niyanta Patel and sophomore Trini Martinez won the top doubles bracket, defeating Lebanon’s Sally Zheng and Yuna Mercedes.

Meanwhile, sophomores Claire Busher and Alana Frawley completed the Cougar’s outstanding day by taking the #2 Doubles Championship with a victory over Cedar Crest’s Kara Cawley and Lexi Ramsey.

By securing three firsts and a second place finish division, Palmyra clinched the team championship. Host Annville-Cleona finished as the runner-up.
