Palmyra 52, Berks Catholic 50 [OT]

Palmyra started their season with a contest Thursday evening at Berks Catholic, the first test of the year following last year’s miraculous turnaround. If the result of this one is any indication, the Lady Cougars could be playing deep into the postseason.

In the 1st quarter, Palmyra was able to dart out to a lead behind a balanced offensive attack that included scoring from four of their starters. Addi Salus led with 4 points, while Jaci Harrison and Elyse Ancharski each drilled a three pointer. At the end of the quarter, the score was 12-7 in favor of the black and orange.

The 2nd quarter was played evenly, with both the Lady Cougars and Saints each scoring 15 points. Mya Doster led with 7 points and Salus added 5 more. Palmyra held a 27-22 lead at the end of the half, which ended with Doster hitting a halfcourt shot as the buzzer sounded.

After the break, the scoring slowed down as Berks Catholic chipped away at the lead. Salus scored 4 of Palmyra’s 6 points in the frame, as Palmyra still held a 33-30 lead going into the final quarter.

In the 4th, Berks Catholic was able to close the gap despite Mackenzie Margut’s 5 points. With that, the game went to overtime, with the score knotted at 46 a piece.

In overtime, Palmyra found themselves trailing 50-49 with time about to expire. Able to run one last play, the ball went to Salus, who dribbled to the top of the key and heaved a straightaway three pointer in a less-than-orthodox fashion as she fought through contact after a nice screen by Doster. Just as the buzzer sounded, the ball went through the hoop, giving Palmyra the 52-50 victory.

Doster led Palmyra with 20 points, while Salus scored 16. Ancharski hit two 1st half threes on her way to 8 points.

Palmyra (1-0) will travel back to Berks County on Friday night to play Fleetwood.

Perkiomen Valley 60, Lebanon 45

In recent years, Perk Valley has risen to the level of being one of the most prominent teams in the state. Last year, they made it to the State Semis, where they were knocked out by the eventual champ, Cardinal O’Hara. On Thursday evening, they made the trip west to play our Lebanon Cedars.

With a strong 1st quarter effort from Kailah Correa, which included two threes on her way to 10 points, the Cedars pressed their powerful opponent early. Olive Brandt played tough defense against Grace Galbavy, a senior who recently committed to Wake Forest, limiting her to just 13 points. However, Perk Valley proved to be just too much and overcame the challenge posed by the Cedars.

Correa finished the game with 20 points. Brandt joined her in double-digits with 13.

Lebanon (1-1) will host Reading on Monday night.

In the 2nd half, the defensive intensity from the Lady Vikings kicked up a notch as they limited Upper Dauphin to just 8 points the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Northern Lebanon scoring remained consistent, with more players getting involved in the action.
