Berks Catholic 49, Annville-Cleona 14
Annville-Cleona entered Week 10 with a 4-5 record, ready to host Berks Catholic. The Saints rolled into Annville with a 5-4 record, riding a three-game win streak after losses to Lancaster Catholic and Schuylkill Valley.
The game began with Catholic scoring on their first drive. Midway through the 1st quarter, Annville-Cleona capitalized upon a Catholic fumble and converted on a halfback option that saw the multi-talented Jonathon Shay hit Jonathan Moran on a 33-yard touchdown pass in a 4th-and-8 situation. The score did not remain tied for long, as Catholic’s Bryce Gumby scored his second touchdown of the night to make it 14-7. The Saints then added another touchdown to build a 21-14 lead by the end of the quarter.
At the beginning of the 2nd quarter, the Dutchmen once again made it a game when quarterback Bryce Keller hit Shay for a 35-yard reception, and Keller finished the drive with a QB-keeper from the 1-yard line. Unfortunately, that would be the last time the game would be close, as Catholic mounted an all-out assault to build a 49-14 by halftime. As part of the offensive explosion from the Saints, Gumby scored his third and fourth touchdowns of the game.
The score would remain unchanged the rest of the way as the Saints cruised to victory.
Annville-Cleona (4-6) now finished their 2024 campaign and will bid adieu to several seniors who have been instrumental in several winning seasons.
ELCO 28, Northern Lebanon 7
Week 10 offered us a rivalry matchup between two LebCo neighbors as the Northern Lebanon Vikings traveled to take on the ELCO Raiders. Northern Lebanon entered with a 3-6 record but found their offensive rhythm in last week’s win over Daniel Boone. For host ELCO they were playing to improve from their 4-5 record and solidify their District 3 Playoff chances on a night where they honored their seniors.
In the 1st quarter, ELCO received the ball and started the game by giving the ball to running back Mitchell Frederick, a move that resulted in big yards. Quarterback Steven Rosado used his legs to move the ball but also found Brady Stoops for a reception as the Raiders drove down the field against a tough Northern Lebanon defense. The drive ended with Frederick punching it in on a 3-yard touchdown run to give ELCO the 7-0 lead.
Freshman quarterback Blake Burdick was once again given the start for the Vikings. In the 2nd quarter, they began moving the ball courtesy of running back Myles Watson and also a reception to Karter Adams. However, the ELCO defense held and forced a punt. The Raiders then quickly dialed up a pass play from Rosado to tight end Dalton Pyszka. Again, Frederick finished the drive with a 14-yard touchdown run, giving ELCO the 14-0 lead.
With the ball back in their possession, Northern Lebanon’s Burdick orchestrated a drive that ended with a short touchdown pass to Bryce Yocum to cut the Raider lead in half. On the next possession, ELCO fumbled the ball away on their side of the field. The Vikings were then forced to go for a field goal, but ELCO was able to block Riley Messinger’s attempt to keep Northern Lebanon from adding points prior to halftime.
Out of the break, Northern Lebanon had the first chance on offense. Another steady dose of Watson and receptions by Adams made it look like the Vikings were going to make it a tie-ball game. The Raiders had other ideas and got key stops by Frederick and Gavin Bicher before Griffin Kreider ended the threat with an interception. Frederick then rushed for his third touchdown of the game, this time from 21 yards out. On the drive that gave Frederick the hat trick, Rosado used his arm to connect once again with Pyszka to effectively move the ball.
In the 4th quarter, Northern Lebanon again had some success but was rebuffed as ELCO kept them from scoring with interceptions by Brinley Donmoyer and Zane Trostle. The Raider then added a 9-yard rushing touchdown by Rosado to make what would become the final score of 28-7.
ELCO (5-5) picks up the win against Northern Lebanon (4-7), which ends the 2024 season.
ELCO will now wait to find out their District 3 Playoff fate, but they are seemingly a lock to play next week.
Northern York 48, Palmyra 14
After Northern started the game with an onside kick, they quickly nabbed a 7-0 lead. Not taking this lightly, Palmyra struck back to take a 14-7 lead by the beginning of the 2nd quarter. Justin Kaplan scored on a 3 yard run followed by Travis McDonnell catching a 19 yard pass from Roman Russek. Cy Melnyk was 2/2 in his PAT attempts. Unfortunately, Northern’s offensive prowess continued as they went on to score 41 unanswered points to take the victory.
In addition to his touchdown, Kaplan ended the game with 160 yards rushing on 15 carries. This included him breaking one run for 70 yards.
One bright spot in this game was the way that Palmyra took care of the ball, only losing the ball once via a fumble. They also forced a fumble by Northern York.
Palmyra (1-9) finished their 2024 season but will look to build on the successes they had during their first year in the new-look Keystone Division.
Thursday
Cedar Crest 62, Lebanon 20
The 52nd Cedar Bowl at Lebanon’s Alumni Stadium welcomed two teams at different points. The Cedar Crest Falcons entered the game with a 6-3 record. The main goal for the visiting team would be to win but to remain healthy and poised to begin their District 3 Playoff journey next week. The Lebanon Cedars entered with a record of 0-9, looking for more positives to build off of going into the 2025 season, where they will look to break their lengthy losing streak that stood at forty-one games entering Thursday.
The game’s scoring began when Tristan Long returned an interception 46 yards to give Cedar Crest an early lead. Shortly thereafter, another interception, this time by Landyn Kline, on Lebanon’s first play of the drive set up Falcon quarterback Jackson Custer finding Cristhian Viveros for a 34-yard touchdown reception. With the score already 14-0, Cedar Crest forced a Lebanon punt and then converted on their third touchdown in the first four minutes of the game, a pass from Custer to Seth Warren. A short time later, Crest made quick work of the field and scored on a short touchdown run by Alex Thies.
Trailing 28-0 late in the 1st quarter, Lebanon finally was able to respond following a monster kickoff return by Malachi Briddell. Brandyn Castro found Messiah Wilson for a short touchdown reception to put the Cedars on the board.
The 2nd quarter began with Custer throwing another touchdown pass, this time to RJ Young. With a successful PAT, the Falcons held a 35-6 lead. Isaiah Zimmerman then found the end zone on a goal-line run to make it 42-6. Fellow running back Josh Tricoche then scored from 3 yards out to extend the Crest lead to 49-6 going into halftime.
With subs already in for Cedar Crest throughout the 2nd quarter, the full-on preservation of health continued into the 2nd half, as the starters completely found their way to the bench for the remainder of the game. This did not slow the Falcons, as quarterback Kai Speaks found Antonio Tirado for a 32-yard touchdown.
With the score 55-6, Briddell had another big return and then caught a 37-yard touchdown reception for Lebanon’s second score of the game. Crest would then respond with a touchdown pass from Cameron Hansell to Tirado.
The 3rd quarter ended with Cedar Crest leading 62-12. However, a 45-yard reception by Briddell at the end of the quarter set up Castro to rush in from 1 yard out. Kai Rivera’s successful run on the two-point conversion made it 62-20 at the beginning of the 4th quarter. The scoreboard remained frozen the rest of the way.
Cedar Crest (7-3) will await their District 3 Playoff opponent. Lebanon (0-10) will begin working immediately to build on the successes under first-year head coach Tyler Pritchett in order to prepare for more success next fall.
