On Saturday, the Lancaster Lebanon League Championship Meet continued at Hempfield High School. On Day 1, LebCo athletes looked tough, combining for nine medals. The second day of competition would bring a spotlight to many of the talented athletes that our local schools have representing them. The result was thirty-one medals being won, a total that included five gold medal-winning performances, three meet records, and several school records.
Cedar Crest’s Kaddel Howard, the defending 400m State Champion, put forth the most jaw-dropping performances of the meet. After missing last year’s League Championship in order to focus on her health ahead of Districts, the sophomore put on a show for all in attendance. In her signature event, Howard ran a 53.64. She not only crossed the finish line 2.6 seconds ahead of her nearest opponent, but she smashed the standing meet record of 56.15 in the process. Howard would do much the same thing in the 200m when she ran a 24.27 to set a new meet record. At the end of the meet, Howard would be joined by Emma Pavlesich (Jr.), Makenzie Wamsher (So.), and Hayden Wamsher (So.) as the foursome ran a 4:03.11 to finish 2nd in the 4×400.
Two gold medals and two meet records made for quite an impressive day for the sophomore Howard, but she was not the only sophomore from Cedar Crest who would turn heads. Eliana Schneider threw the Javelin 153’1” to repeat as League Champion. Her throw was 33’ further than her nearest opponent, and it set a new meet record by 11’. The multitalented Schneider was not done climbing the podium as she reached 5’6” in the High Jump to claim a second gold. She then placed 3rd in the 800m (2:17.64), just behind teammate Lizzie Lowe (2nd, 2:17. 55).
The other gold medal winning performance came from the Annville-Cleona Boys 4x800m team. They entered the meet as the #5 seed, but the team of Landon Hostetter (Jr.), Matt Clemson (Jr.), Oliver Funck (So.), and David Moran (So.) would be the fastest team on Saturday when they finished in a time of 8:08.15. Later in the day, Moran ran a 1:57.46 in the 800m to finish with a silver medal.
The 4x100m relays brought some fast times. The Cedar Crest Boys team of Leo Tirado (Sr.), Jeremiah Santiago (Sr.), Folashade Rahman (Jr.), and Cameron Tirado (So.) finished 2nd with a time of 43.48. On the Girls’ side, Annville-Cleona’s team of Miracle Hershey (Jr.), Jada Morales (Fr.), Sophia Caporaletti (Jr.), and Kendall Cooper (Jr.) finished 4th (49.33) and ELCO’s team of Lizzie Dimov (Sr.), Becky Dimov (Sr.), Makenna Haas (Jr.), and Reece Woelfling (Jr.) finished 6th (50.83). Both Annville and ELCO broke their own school records that they had set this season.
Of the relay participants, ELCO’s Haas would take 4th in the Long Jump with a new school record of 17’8.25”. Lebanon’s Zariyah Whigham was once again a place ahead of Haas, earning bronze after the two went 1-2 in the Triple Jump of Friday Night. Also following her 4x100m success, Annville’s Cooper finished 5th in the 200m (26.51) and would also join the same members of the 4x100m for an 8th place finish in the 4x400m.
Other highlights included Lebanon’s Jalik Hill (Sr.) taking 3rd in the 200m with a time of 22.61. Hill then finished 4th in the 400m (50.98), just ahead of teammate Tyler Long (7th, 51.98). Another Cedar, Ramon Urena Batista (Sr.), would also have a banner day as he finished 5th in the 1600m with a time of 4:18.28 to break the Lebanon school record. Urena Batista would then finish 7th in the 800m (1:59.34), with fellow Cedar Owen Kreider (Jr.) finishing 4th (1:58.84).
Other medal winners for the girls included: Liliana Harrison, Lebanon (4th, Shot Put); Ruby Wolfe, Cedar Crest (5th, Pole Vault); Hailee Kreiser, Cedar Crest (6th, Pole Vault); Sara Miller, ELCO (8th, 300m Hurdles); Annville-Cleona 4×800 (8th).
Additional medal winners for the boys included Tristan Long, Cedar Crest (4th, Shot Put); Alex Kissinger, Cedar Crest (5th, Shot Put / 8th, Discus); Luke Macchione, ELCO (6th, 300m Hurdles); Reed Fretz, Cedar Crest (8th, 110m Hurdles); Malachi Victor, Cedar Crest (8th, 300m Hurdles); Cedar Crest 4x400m (6th); Cedar Crest 4x800m (4th); Lebanon 4x400m (5th); Lebanon 4x800m (6th).
