Palmyra Girls Basketball Season Outlook
Last season did not go according to plan, but it turned into an opportunity for growth as Coach John Polly was able to give key minutes to his younger players as the year went on. Those players returned this season with a new level of determination after working hard in the offseason, intent on improving upon the five wins they experienced in ’22-’23.
Senior Keely Bowers is leading the group of returning players who missed a series of games last year due to injury. She enters this season fresh off of the field hockey season, during which she won All-State honors. In transitioning back to the hardwood, she will provide critical shooting to this unit, especially from the free throw line in close games.
While Bowers is a standout performer, she is only one part of a talented core of players that this team will rely upon throughout the year. That group starts with senior Emma Sibbach and junior Mac Margut, who will provide experience and leadership in the lineup. After that, a solid group of underclassmen will contribute night in and night out: sophomores Addi Salus and Mya Doster, joined by freshman Elyse Ancharski.
For Palmyra to be successful, they will need to finish each game. This will start with a level of defensive cohesiveness that will make it difficult for other teams to keep pace. The defense was on full display in the Fleetwood Tip Off Tournament this past weekend when they held the host team to just 16 points. They then showed how they could lockdown and hit key shots when it mattered most, using overtime to defeat Berks Catholic in the championship round.
In a standard “preview”, the primary focus would have only been on Palmyra’s plan to improve. Given that the Lady Cougars have already begun to show their hand with their first three wins, they are already proving that they have already moved beyond the planning phase. Given their new look, it will be worth watching to see how far this group will be able to push in putting Palmyra Girls Basketball back on the map.
