Cedar Crest Boys Basketball Season Outlook
After some early season struggles last year, the Falcons reeled off eight straight victories to take 2nd place in Section 1. Their postseason was shorter than they would have wished, ending with a 1st round loss to Wilson. The fuse was lit immediately as this solid group of veterans began to prepare themselves for ’23-’24. The team put in the hard work during the off-season, combined with their experience of having won some hotly contested games in their years playing together, and they are now ready to take it to the next level.
Senior guard Leo Tirado told LebCoSports.com, “We’ve been working hard over the summer to prepare for the season. We know what we are capable of.” While Tirado is just one voice, this is the sentiment among every young man on Coach Smith’s roster, as they intend to avoid leaving their work unfinished.
They have the talent necessary to push their limits while getting playoff-ready during a demanding regular season schedule. What benefits the Falcons is their balanced combination of size and speed. When it comes to size, they have 6’6” senior Aiden Schomp and 6’7” junior RJ Young looking to dominate around the basket. They also have a physical senior in Fernando Marquez, who proved on the football field this past Fall that he can exert his will. When it comes to speed and shooting, this group will rely on seniors Owen Chernich, Leo Tirado, and Alex Abreu, along with juniors Danny Speaks and Jackson Custer. They will also have several other contributors working into the rotation, providing valuable support during the grind of the season.
This group has excellent chemistry overall, but one of the most fascinating things about this unit is their unselfishness when it comes to scoring. They are a balanced team that relies on several scorers each night, often different players from game to game. This flexibility allows Crest to exploit the weaknesses of their opponents and to find what it takes to walk off the court with the win. This season, expect that to be the outcome more often than not. It will just be a question as to how many games they can put on their schedule in the postseason, which will be the ultimate measuring stick of success for this group of talented players.
