LebCo Track & Field Honor Roll: Top Performances by Event (through March 31)

Cougars Keep Rolling, Move to 3-0 with Road Sweep at Mechanicsburg

With temperatures in the 40s and mist hanging around throughout Thursday’s meet at Mechanicsburg, Palmyra competed in a much different environment than the one it saw on Tuesday, when conditions pushed toward 80 degrees. The Cougars handled the contrast just fine, coming away with a sweep as the Palmyra girls earned a 96-49 victory and the boys followed with a 111-38 win.

Girls: Palmyra 96, Mechanicsburg 49

Palmyra’s girls put together another balanced effort, using sprint success, hurdles dominance, relay wins, and strong field-event performances to help secure the team victory. Helena Baker turned in one of the day’s top individual efforts by winning both hurdle races, while freshman Emily Bearinger picked up her first individual varsity win by taking the 200 and also ran a leg on Palmyra’s winning 4×100 relay.

The Cougars also got a big day in the field from Isabella Owens, who swept the horizontal jumps by winning both the long jump and triple jump. Caleigha Mull added a win in the high jump, Nautica Brunelle claimed the pole vault, and Abbie Vates took top honors in the javelin. Palmyra also picked up relay victories in the 4×100 and 4×800.

Mechanicsburg still produced several strong efforts in defeat. Lindsay McCorkel won the 800, Emily Sweitzer captured both the 1600 and 3200, Cora Rice swept the throws in the discus and shot put, and the Wildcats added a win in the 4×400 relay.

Still, Palmyra’s ability to score across the lineup helped the Cougars steadily build separation in the team score, with Amber McCurdy adding to that effort by taking second in the 1600 in a personal-best time.

Boys: Palmyra 111, Mechanicsburg 38

Palmyra’s boys controlled much of the meet on both the track and in the field, with their depth showing up in the sprints, distance events, hurdles, relays, and throws. Aaron Villafane was a three-event winner, taking the 100 and 200 while also running a leg on the Cougars’ winning 4×100 relay. Cornelius Cummings added two wins by taking the 1600 and 3200, helping pace Palmyra’s effort on the track.

The Cougars also got key victories from Dacian Hutchinson, who swept the hurdle races, and from their 4×400 relay team. In the field, Josh Tshudy was also a two-event winner after sweeping the shot put and discus, while Jaxton Bargerwon the pole vault and Justus Maina edged teammate Jake Schelhorn in the javelin.

Mechanicsburg countered with a big day from Jackson Sabolchick, who won the high jump, long jump, and triple jump, while the Wildcats also picked up the win in the 4×800 relay. But Palmyra’s overall balance and ability to pile up points throughout the lineup helped the Cougars finish off the sweep.
