Smith Dominates on the Mound, But Garden Spot Slips Past ELCO
ELCO was back home on Wednesday looking to bounce back from Monday’s loss to Donegal, and the Raiders again turned to senior ace Austin Smith to lead the way. Smith delivered another dominant strikeout performance, piling up 11 punchouts, but Garden Spot did just enough offensively to hand ELCO a 4-2 setback.
ELCO grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the 1st. After putting pressure on the Spartans, Wyatt Parker brought home the game’s first run on a groundout to make it 1-0.
Garden Spot answered in the top of the 3rd and used that inning to swing the game. An ELCO error helped the Spartans draw even before Zander Clymer ripped a run-scoring double to center, giving Garden Spot a 2-1 edge.
The Raiders fought back in the bottom of the 4th. Grant Wenger grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed ELCO to tie the game at 2-2 and briefly shift the momentum back to the home side.
That tie did not last long. In the top of the 5th, Brody Torrance delivered a single that brought home the go-ahead run for Garden Spot, and the Spartans added an insurance tally later to create the final margin.
Even in the loss, Smith again looked like one of the area’s top arms. The senior struck out 11 over 6.2 innings, allowed five hits, and walked two while keeping ELCO in position to battle deep into the game. It marked another double-digit strikeout outing for Smith, who gave the Raiders every chance against a solid Garden Spot lineup.
ELCO finished with six hits, getting one apiece from Tanner Hibshman, Zach Martin, Wyatt Parker, Grant Wenger, Austin Smith, and Braden Gettle. Parker drove in a run, while Wenger added the other RBI.
Garden Spot got a big day from Torrance, who went 3-for-4 at the top of the lineup. Clymer added a double and an RBI, while the Spartans also pressured ELCO with aggressive baserunning, swiping five bases and turning a double play.
ELCO is now 3-5 and will not have to wait long for another chance to get back into the win column, as the Raiders are set to host Tulpehocken on Thursday.
