Wrestling: Trostle, Wolford, Miller, Foltz Medal at State Championships – Day 3 Recap

On Saturday, the final day of the PIAA State Wrestling Championships took place at Hershey’s Giant Center, where Lebanon County’s remaining medal contenders closed out an impressive weekend on the mats. What began Thursday with 12 wrestlers from five local schools making the trip to Hershey turned into a tremendous showing for Lebanon County wrestling, resulting in a very impressive medal haul by the time the weekend came to an end.

Leading the way was Kylee Trostle, who gave ELCO the highest State finish by a wrestler in school history with her 4th-place finish at 112-pounds. Trostle’s performance also earned her the second State medal of her career and added another major accomplishment to an already impressive resume.

Northern Lebanon senior Sam Wolford also finished his career in style, battling his way to 5th place in AA at 121-pounds. Wolford’s podium finish marked the third State medal of his career, and notably, he reached the podium in three different seasons at three different weight classes, an impressive reflection of both his consistency and ability to adapt.

ELCO junior Klint Miller delivered another major highlight for Lebanon County by earning 7th place at 160-pounds in AAA. His finish was significant for the Raiders, as Miller became the first ELCO male wrestler to win a State medal since 2007, and the first non-senior from the school to do it.

Palmyra sophomore Elijah Foltz rounded out the county’s medalists with an 8th-place finish at 107-pounds. Wrestling in his first full season of competition, Foltz battled back from an opening-round loss to work his way onto the podium and became the first Cougar to earn a State medal since 1988.

By the end of the weekend, Lebanon County walked away from the Giant Center with four State medalists, a fitting reward for a group that delivered from start to finish. From school history to breakthrough performances to career-capping moments, the final day put an exclamation point on a weekend that said plenty about the strength of wrestling across Lebanon County.

Girls

Kylee Trostle (ELCO)

Trostle closed out another outstanding run at the PIAA State Championships on Saturday, as the ELCO junior finished 4th at 112-pounds. Her medal-winning performance marked the highest State finish by a wrestler in ELCO school history and added a second trip to the podium to her growing resume.

After guaranteeing herself a medal on Friday, Trostle returned Saturday morning and earned a 7-0 decision over Mya Pallone of Quakertown in the consolation semifinals, punching her ticket to the 3rd-place match.

In the battle for bronze, Trostle dropped a 6-2 decision to Morgan Hyland of Easton, last year’s State silver medalist. The bout was closer than the final score indicated, as a late takedown by Hyland added to the margin in the closing moments.

Trostle finishes the season with a 42-4 record and now owns the second State medal of her career after previously placing 6th as a freshman. With one more season still ahead, it will be exciting to see how the ELCO junior finishes out her varsity career.

AA Boys

Sam Wolford (Northern Lebanon)

After a quarterfinal loss on Friday, Wolford battled back with two straight wins to move himself into medal contention at 121-pounds in the AA bracket. The Northern Lebanon senior returned to the mat Saturday morning having already guaranteed himself a spot on the podium in the final high school matches of his career before heading on to the Naval Academy.

Wolford’s first bout on Saturday was a tightly contested match against Brock Rothermel of Line Mountain, with the winner moving on to wrestle for 3rd place. Wolford pushed the bout into sudden victory, where Rothermel secured the deciding takedown in overtime to send him to the 5th-place match.

There, Wolford responded like a veteran, turning in a dominant final performance. In a 12-2 major decision over Flynn Arnestad of Faith Christian Academy, Wolford scored three takedowns while allowing just one neutral point and a late escape.

With the victory, Wolford closed out his outstanding career with a 195-31 record and the third State medal of his career. He previously finished 4th as a sophomore at 107-pounds, earned silver as a junior at 114-pounds, and then battled his way to 5th this winter at 121-pounds after moving up another weight class to face a whole new set of challenges.

AAA Boys

Klint Miller (ELCO)

Miller put together one of Lebanon County’s best performances of the weekend, battling all the way to the podium in the AAA 160-pound bracket. After a strong showing on Friday that included a major decision over J.D. Heiser of Boyertown and a technical fall over Dominick Tunison of Nazareth, the ELCO junior dropped a hard-fought match late in the evening that sent him to Saturday’s 7th-place bout. By the end of the tournament, however, Miller made sure he was leaving Hershey with hardware.

In Saturday’s medal match, Miller looked to be in trouble for much of the bout against Jack White of Norwin. He trailed through the first two periods and found himself down 6-1 with just a minute remaining. But when it mattered most, Miller dug deep and delivered a stunning rally, storming back to pull out an 8-6 victory and lock up 7th place. Against White, Miller finished the job and, yes, you could say there were a few Seven Nation Army vibes in the closing stretch.

The medal was significant for more than one reason. Miller became the first ELCO male wrestler to earn a State medal since 2007, and he also became the first non-senior from ELCO to win a State medal. Already easy to spot because of his mullet, Miller now has something even more distinguishable to go with it: a State medal around his neck.

Miller finishes his junior season with a 38-6 record, and after the way he battled onto the podium this weekend, there is plenty of reason for optimism heading into next season.

Elijah Foltz (Palmyra)

Foltz woke up Saturday knowing he would finish the day on the podium, a fitting reward for the sophomore’s gritty showing at 107-pounds in his first trip to the PIAA State Championships. After battling back from an opening-round loss earlier in the tournament, Foltz worked his way into the medal round and gave Palmyra a State medalist by weekend’s end. It was the school’s first since 1988.

In Saturday’s 7th-place match against Bryce Thomas of Moon, the bout remained tight deep into the match before turning in the third period. That was when Thomas executed a reversal that proved to be the difference in a 4-3 decision, leaving Foltz with an 8th-place finish.

Foltz closes out his sophomore season with a 40-6 record in what was his first full season of competition. With the way he battled through the State tournament and the progress he showed throughout the winter, there is plenty of reason to believe there is a lot of strong wrestling still ahead.
