On Friday, Day Two of the PIAA State Wrestling Championships took place at Hershey’s Giant Center. Six Lebanon County wrestlers survived Day 1 and returned to the mats looking to keep their medal hopes alive. By the end of the night, four of them had done exactly that, locking up spots on the podium and giving Lebanon County multiple wrestlers still battling for placement on Saturday.

Leading that group are ELCO’s Kylee Trostle and Northern Lebanon’s Samuel Wolford, both of whom remain in position to place as high as bronze. Trostle opened Friday with a quarterfinal win to secure her second career State medal before a semifinal loss sent her into Saturday’s consolation semifinals. Wolford also kept his medal hopes rolling, rebounding from a tough quarterfinal setback with two straight wins in consolations to guarantee himself a spot on the podium for the third time in his career.

Also assured of medals are ELCO’s Klint Miller and Palmyra’s Elijah Foltz. Miller put together two straight wins on Friday to break into medal contention and will now wrestle for 7th place, guaranteeing himself the first State medal of his career. Foltz continued his impressive bounce-back run through consolations, winning twice on Friday to reach the medal round. The Palmyra sophomore will also wrestle for 7th place on Saturday. For Miller and Foltz, they will both be stepping onto the State podium for the first time.

The tournament came to an end Friday for ELCO sophomores Kane Kline and Aleric Raihl, though both battled hard in Hershey after surviving Day 1 and earning the chance to wrestle into the second day of the State Championships.

Good luck to Trostle, Wolford, Miller, and Foltz as they compete for their places on the podium!

Action begins at 9:30 am this morning, with the first medal matches set to begin at 11:30 am.

Below is a recap of each wrestler’s Friday. Blue indicates they are still active in the tournament.

Kylee Trostle (ELCO)

Trostle opened Friday by securing her spot on the podium with a quarterfinal win, then saw her championship-side run come to an end in the semifinals. After advancing to Friday’s quarterfinals with a dominant opening-round tech fall on Thursday, Trostle returned to the mat and earned a 4-0 decision over Raya Sentipal of Burgettstown in the quarterfinals. That victory guaranteed her a State medal. In the semifinals, Trostle was pinned by Daylee Watson of Conneaut Area in 4:54, sending her to Saturday’s consolation semifinals.

Next up, Trostle will face Quakertown freshman Mya Pallone before moving to the medal round.

Samuel Wolford (Northern Lebanon)

Wolford’s pursuit of a third State medal hit a bump early Friday, but the Northern Lebanon senior responded the way accomplished wrestlers do — by battling back to earn his place on the podium. After opening the day with a tough one-point loss in the quarterfinals, Wolford regrouped in the consolation bracket and won twice more to secure another State medal.

Coming off Thursday’s dominant opening-round technical fall, Wolford began Friday with a 7-6 loss to Dakota Santamaria of Tussey Mountain in the quarterfinals. The setback dropped him into consolations, where he answered with a 5-3 decision over Garrett Weyandt of Chestnut Ridge before rolling to a 14-1 major decision against Preston Bubash of Elizabeth Forward. With those two wins, Wolford locked up a spot on the podium and will now open Saturday against Brock Rothermel of Line Mountain in a bout that will determine whether he wrestles for bronze or 5th place.

The sophomore, making his first appearance at the PIAA State Championships, kept that run going on Day 2 by winning two more matches to guarantee himself a spot on the podium. Foltz is now headed to Saturday’s 7th-place match, meaning he will finish the weekend as a State medalist.

On Thursday, Foltz fell 4-0 to Parker Jennings of Trinity in Championship Round 1 before responding with a 4-1 sudden victory over Michael Nicosia of Bethlehem Catholic to keep his season alive. With that, Miller is guaranteed to leave the Giant Center with the first State medal of his career.

On Thursday, Miller bounced back from an opening-round loss by pinning Sutton Stoner of Butler in 53 seconds to keep his season alive.
