Cedar Crest Opens Track & Field Season with Sweep Over Hempfield
Cedar Crest kicked off their 2026 Track and Field season on Monday with the Falcons welcoming Hempfield for a Section 1 dual meet. They responded by turning in a strong opening-day performance on their home turf.
When the afternoon was finished, Cedar Crest had secured wins on both sides. The Falcon boys rolled to a 104-45 victory, while the Cedar Crest girls earned an 83-67 win over the Black Knights.
Girls Recap: Cedar Crest 83, Hempfield 67
Cedar Crest’s girls leaned on several standout efforts to claim the team victory in the season opener. Sophie Meli was one of the top contributors for the Falcons, earning 1st place in both the 1600m run and 3200m run. Ellie Schneider also put together a big afternoon, winning the 800m run, shot put, and javelin while also tying for 3rd place in the high jump.
The Falcons added more 1st-place finishes from Kaddel Howard in the 400m dash, Makenzie Wamsher in the 300m hurdles, Paris Jarrels in the high jump, Jesslyn Risser in the pole vault, and Cedar Crest’s 3200m relay team.
Howard’s 400m was especially eye-catching. The senior essentially jogged to a winning time of 56.9, crossing the line nearly 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Using the standard dual-meet scoring format of 5 points for 1st, 3 for 2nd, and 1 for 3rd, Cedar Crest also piled up key points through its depth. Mikalyn Weaber finished 2nd in both the shot put and discus, Layla Herbein took 2nd place in the long jump and 3rd place in the pole vault, and Sophie Musser added a 3rd-place finish in the 300m hurdles after also contributing to the Falcons’ winning 3200m relay.
Hempfield had its share of strong individual efforts as well. Heisey won both the 100m hurdles and 200m dash, then added a 2nd-place finish in the 300m hurdles. Alexis Givler captured 1st place in the 100m dash and also ran on Hempfield’s winning 400m relay team while finishing 2nd in the 200m dash. The Black Knights also got 1st-place finishes from Myers in the long jump and Elli Yaeger in the triple jump.
