Palmyra Shuts Out Deer Lakes Behind Strong Pitching, Aggressive Baserunning
Palmyra opened its official season in strong fashion on Saturday, blanking Deer Lakes 5-0 at Grand Park Field 4 in Myrtle Beach behind a combined shutout from three pitchers and an aggressive performance on the bases. The Cougars struck first when Aiden Willard stole home in the opening inning, then added to the lead in the second with RBI hits from Mathew Eldridge and Nolan Bown.
Palmyra kept pressure on Deer Lakes throughout the game, finishing with 9 hits and 8 stolen bases. The Cougars also made the most of their opportunities defensively, turning 2 double plays while keeping Deer Lakes from generating any sustained offense.
Logan Kriner, Grady Stephens, and Willard teamed up to hold Deer Lakes to just 2 hits, with Palmyra not allowing a hit over the final 5 innings. Kriner set the tone with 3 scoreless innings and 3 strikeouts, and Willard recorded the final out on a groundout by Brady Plummer to seal the shutout.
Willard led the Cougars offensively, going 2-for-2 with a run scored, 1 RBI, 2 walks, and 4 stolen bases. Adam Strohecker and Jesse Willi each added 2 hits, while Eldridge and Bown both drove in runs.
Deer Lakes drew 6 walks and played error-free defense, but could not break through against Palmyra’s pitching staff. James Gall and Nolan Danka each recorded a hit, while Eli Misera worked 2 walks.
Palmyra is now 2-0 on the day, but 1-0 in games that officially count toward its regular-season record as the Cougars look to make another run at States.
Palmyra will face Archbishop Wood on Sunday.
