Cedar Crest Pushes Undefeated L-S in Narrow Loss
Cedar Crest notched a shutout Friday night against Manheim Central, an exciting moment in the revitalization movement of the Falcon baseball program. On Monday, the Falcons got a big test against perennial powerhouse Lampeter-Strasburg, which carried a 5-0 record into the matchup. The Pioneers had also been dominant offensively early this season, averaging nearly 11 runs per game. Even so, Cedar Crest showed it could go toe-to-toe with one of the top teams around before ultimately falling 4-2.
Lampeter-Strasburg wasted little time jumping in front. In the top of the 1st, Cooper Williams launched a home run to center field to give the Pioneers an early lead.
That could have been the start of a long afternoon, but Cedar Crest never let the game get away. The Falcons stayed within reach behind a big-time effort from Davin Kolter, who matched a powerful Lampeter-Strasburg lineup inning after inning. Kolter struck out 13 batters over five innings, allowing just two hits and three runs while walking one. Against an unbeaten team that had been scoring in bunches, the Cedar Crest right-hander kept the Falcons in position to make a push.
Cedar Crest had to work to generate offense against Lampeter-Strasburg starter Williams and the Pioneer bullpen, but the Falcons kept applying pressure. They showed patience at the plate with six walks and remained aggressive on the bases, piling up six stolen bases. Skyler Sherman and Landon Yeingst each stole multiple bases as Cedar Crest looked for ways to create a spark.
That pressure paid off in the bottom of the 5th. Sherman used his aggressive baserunning to get all the way to 3rd, then came home on an error to put Cedar Crest on the board and trim the deficit. The Falcons later added another run in the bottom of the 7th, when Mason Cevette drilled a solo home run to center field to provide a late jolt. However, it would not be enough as the Pioneers escaped South Lebanon with the victory.
Cedar Crest finished with hits from Brayden Dorshimer, Cevette, Yeingst, and Chase Norris. Cevette led the Falcons with an RBI, while Sherman and Yeingst helped create opportunities with their work on the bases.
Lampeter-Strasburg, meanwhile, got a huge day from Williams, who went 2-for-3 and drove in all four of the Pioneers’ runs. Chase Messinger also added two hits and stole three bases for the visitors.
Williams earned the win for Lampeter-Strasburg after tossing 3.2 innings and striking out eight. The Pioneers then pieced things together out of the bullpen to finish off the victory.
Cedar Crest is now 3-2, but has proven that it can compete with some of the best teams in District 3. They will have a chance to keep moving forward when they travel to face Penn Manor on Wednesday.
