Cedar Crest Rallies in Opener, Tops Exeter Township 8-3
Cedar Crest used timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and a dominant relief outing from Chase Norris to earn an 8-3 road victory over Exeter Township on Friday.
Exeter Township struck first in the bottom of the 1st, manufacturing a run to take an early lead. But Cedar Crest answered right back in the 2nd inning, capitalizing on a mix of clutch hitting and Exeter miscues. Landon Yeingst sparked the rally with a double down the right field line, and the Falcons took advantage of an error, a walk to Isaac Kreider, and a sacrifice fly from Mason Cevette to push across three runs and grab a 3-1 advantage.
From there, Cedar Crest continued to pressure Exeter Township with patient at-bats and aggressive work on the bases. The Falcons drew eight walks and stole six bases, constantly forcing the Eagles to play defense. Chase Ruhl, Yeingst, and Norris combined for four of Cedar Crest’s six hits while scoring six runs and driving in three from the lower half of the lineup.
Ruhl and Yeingst each collected two hits in the victory. Ruhl scored three runs, drove in a pair, and swiped two bases, while Yeingst added two doubles and two runs scored. Cevette also drove in two runs for the Falcons, and both Lucas Schreier and Kreider showed patience at the plate with two walks apiece.
On the mound, Cedar Crest received a strong two-part effort. Cevette started and worked 3.2 innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out six. Norris then took over and shut the door in relief, earning the win with 3.1 innings of work. The right-hander allowed just two hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six without issuing a walk.
In fact, Norris was so locked in that Exeter hitters probably felt like they were facing the another Norris (Chuck, RIP). The Falcons’ Norris piled up strikeouts and controlled the game late as Cedar Crest finished with 12 strikeouts on the night.
Exeter Township added a solo home run by Matt Warom in the 5th, but the Falcons maintained control down the stretch.
With their first win now under the belt, Cedar Crest (1-0) will look to carry the momentum into Monday when the Falcons travel to face Lebanon.
