New Covenant Boys Basketball Season Outlook
New Covenant enters the 2025–26 season with heightened expectations after a strong campaign a year ago that saw a brand-new starting lineup still finish with 13 wins—a total that likely exceeded most projections. With the majority of that core returning, the Flames believe they are positioned to take another major step forward and compete for both a Division Title and a CCAC Championship.
The returning group is highlighted by junior Talan VanderPloog, the team’s leading scorer last season at 14.7 points per game and a 2nd Team All-Conference selection. Junior Grayden Summers (10.7 ppg) gives the Flames another proven scorer, while senior Grant Canakis and sophomore Ethan Schaetzle return after impactful seasons and productive offseasons. This core has grown physically, mentally, and competitively through a full summer of tournaments against high-level opponents.
Two newcomers are expected to make immediate contributions. Senior Ben Rhine, a transfer from Cedar Crest, has already elevated the program’s work ethic, leadership, and overall basketball IQ. His skill level and approach have raised team expectations across the board. Freshman Braden Demler steps in as the new point guard, bringing poise, court awareness, and big-game experience uncommon for a ninth grader. His ability to stabilize the offense fills a long-standing need for the Flames.
The notable departure is Alex Hart (2nd Team All-Conference), who transferred after averaging 10.4 points and 8.5 rebounds. His loss is significant, but the staff believes the returning group—and the development shown over the summer—will allow the Flames to not only fill that gap but surpass last season’s ceiling.
With a seasoned core, impactful newcomers, and momentum built through a demanding offseason schedule, New Covenant is prepared to compete with the CCAC’s best. Expectations are high—and this group is ready to embrace them.
