Laney Zimmerman

During the Week of September 15th, New Covenant’s Laney Zimmerman showcased why she’s one of the Flames’ most important players. The sophomore anchored the defense while also finding the back of the cage three times, converting on penalty kicks in critical moments to help secure wins over Oley Valley and Harrisburg Christian. Her ability to shine in high-pressure situations led to our voters selecting her as the LebCoSports.com Athlete of the Week.

Alayna Zimmerman—known to many as “Laney”—explained the mentality behind her recent success: “My team needed me to step up in high pressure situations. I was able to collect myself and score 3 penalty kicks to help my team towards these victories.” That balance between composure and competitiveness has been a hallmark of her game.

Her coach, Cody Kantner, echoed that sentiment.

“Laney is a skilled player whose ability and attitude enhance and strengthen not just the defense, but the entire team. She has poise under pressure and I don’t think I have ever seen her panic. As a center back defender she has a lot of responsibility stopping attacking teams and she excels at it with skill, speed, grit and poise. Laney can effectively transition the ball for the attack. Her dribbling skills are phenomenal and she can make deep runs. She is an ace at penalty kicks and cooks a lot of keepers. And finally, but most importantly, Laney is extremely coachable.”

For Zimmerman, the 2024 season is about more than just individual stats. “I would like to have more of an offensive presence even while doubling down on my defensive efforts, and build on last year’s success,” she said. At the same time, she knows her role fits into a bigger picture: “Overall our team goal is to work towards another districts run and qualify for the CCAC title game for the second year in a row. My best efforts can help achieve these goals.”

She also points to those who’ve shaped her journey, from her team captains, who push her to be her best, to former teammate Miracle Hershey, whose work ethic still inspires her. She expressed gratitude for her parents, who dedicate time to supporting her, and most importantly to God, who she credits for keeping her healthy and giving her opportunities: “He gave me a school that prioritizes my faith and not just stats on a field.”

Zimmerman is more than a one-sport standout. She also plays basketball, competes in bowling through a co-op with Paloma School, and throws javelin with Annville-Cleona. In fact, one of her favorite memories was playing at the Giant Center in the state basketball tournament in 2025. Her family also boasts athletic success, with her younger sister Kylie reaching states in barrel racing, and cousins Hannah and Ty Custer competing in college lacrosse and baseballrespectively.

Off the field, Zimmerman stays busy with youth group activities at Lebanon Free Church, where she also serves in the kindergarten class. She babysits, spends time with family, and is always preparing for the next season. Looking forward, she’s open about letting her faith guide her path: “I’m not sure yet, but I am asking God to set the path and I’ll follow where He leads me.”

Kantner also noted how Zimmerman embodies the mission of the program:

“As a Christian school one of our objectives is to have a Christ-like spirit, yet be fierce in competition. Laney is an example of being a fierce competitor, exemplifying that Christ-like behavior and just being a real joy to coach.”

Zimmerman and the Flames have continued to build momentum. New Covenant is currently on a seven-game win streak, improving their record to 8-2-1 as they aim for a return trip to the CCAC Championship game.

Congratulations to Laney Zimmerman on being named Athlete of the Week, and best of luck to her and the Flames as they continue to chase their goals this season.
