Following last week’s thrilling fourth-quarter comeback, the Cedar Crest Falcons entered Week 2 eager to remain unbeaten. To move to 2-0, they faced the Spring Grove Rockets on the road—a team that had dominated Northern York 34-0 in their opener.
The two programs met last season when Cedar Crest rolled to a 45-7 victory, but this time the Falcons needed a steadier effort to secure a win.
Spring Grove struck early, connecting on a 59-yard touchdown down the sideline just three minutes into the contest, then added a quarterback run late in the first quarter to build a 13-0 lead.
Cedar Crest responded in the second quarter when Isaiah Zimmerman turned a screen pass into a 36-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 13-6. The junior running back contributed mightily, finishing with a team-high 108 rushing yards on 14 carries, showcasing his ability to make big plays. Kai Speaks added 27 rushing yards and threw for 151 yards, connecting with Liam Setcavage for a long 25-yard gain and Antonio Tirado for 27 yards. The Falcons totaled 300 offensive yards and 25 first downs, moving the chains consistently against a strong Spring Grove defense.
Despite this effort, Spring Grove capped a 98-yard drive with a touchdown just before halftime, giving the Falcons a 20-6 deficit at the break.
Late in the third quarter, Garrett Starry intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, narrowing the gap to 20-13. Starry led the defense with 10 assists, 2 solo tackles, 1 forced fumble, and the pick-six. Other standouts included Kasen Dudek (6 tackles, 1 TFL), Jackson Chernich (7 tackles, 1 TFL), and Jayden Storm (2 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack).
Early in the fourth quarter, Spring Grove extended their lead to 27-13. Their defense then sealed the win with a pair of late interceptions, ending Cedar Crest’s comeback hopes.
In the passing game, Liam Setcavage led with 50 yards on 3 receptions, Isaiah Zimmerman added a receiving touchdown and 36 yards, and Antonio Tirado contributed 27 yards on 2 catches. Cameron Tirado and Travis Kemberling added key gains to sustain drives.
Cedar Crest (1-1) will regroup and look to bounce back next Friday when they return home for their opener against Warwick.
